I've been using an Apple laptop for 9 years now and I can tell you that there never was a Control key on the right. There wasn't even an Option key on the right until 4 or 5 years ago. Where the Option key is now used to be an Enter key, not to be confused with a Return key.
When I have to use a full keyboard, it drives me insane. I can never remember where to find the Home and End keys, and I'm just not used to using the right-hand VO keys. I really don't want Apple to change the laptop keyboard, and you can always connect an extended keyboard if you have to.
