Re: Trillian - a new kid on the IM block

2011-08-08 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi.
Your contact list for MSN, AIM or what you have should already be visible in
the window. To go to the Facebook and twitter features, go to the "window" menu
and arrow down until you hear "your username on twitter" or "your user name on
Facebook". "Your user name" will be the name you use on the respective
services. Now, hit vo+spacebar and a new window called "your username on
service" (where service is either Facebook or Twitter) will be brought up. I
haven't as of yet found out what way is the best for reading these windows,
groups or dom and as i say, you appear to be able to comment on others posts
but not be able to write your own. You can write a post alright, but there's no
button that VO can see to send the post off to the service. I have filed a bug
about that and given it a high priority. Let's hope they do something about it,
since this is the cleanest interface to Facebook i've seen for the Mac yet.

Re: A Question About Closing Dashboard Widgets

2011-08-08 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Mark and Others.

I don't understand what wigits are and if they are good, how do you use and for
what purpose? I just know that mine keep opening and get in the way and can't
close.

My other problem is that I do not find Mission control accessible as I want to
access the short cut menu and disable the short cut keys pop up.

I am doing a fresh install of Lion in three weeks so I hope Safari will work
properly as web pages do not open unless I am in Itunes.

Kawal.

web sites using flash

2011-08-08 Thread Christopher Wright

Hello all,
I'm currently in talks with a potential client.

What's the verdict on the use of flash when creating web sites? Below you'll
find an abbreviated version of an email, from this person, that made me want
to ask about this.

At present my company is gearing up to launch a
site to give tours for those who have autism and asperger's (as well as
other special needs). We will also be offering weekend
tours for everyone (not just autistic spectrum) as part of the site too --
weekend historical and cultural trips.

That said, I have about two weeks to put a site together, soup to nuts,
talking about the various offerings and explaining our itinerary in
detail.

I was seriously thinking about using Wix flash based sites for the
offerings-- have you ever worked with them?

Adium And Events

2011-08-08 Thread Earle
I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips for setting up events in Adium.
I've been using it on and off for a while but I really want to start to
customize it. I think I've figured out how to set up most events. I just can't
get my contact sign in event to work. I have it set to play a sound when
someone signs in and that works fine. I just can't get it to speak the name of
the person signing in. I tried setting it to speak event and that didn't work
for me. After that I tried to have it speak specific text and that didn't work
either. I used the %n substitution and I thought that would make it speak the
name of the person signing in. This didn't work though. Can anyone think of
what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi I'm thinking of doing multi track recording with a macc and had a quote for
an audio interface, 2 in 2 out I want to play guitar as i have a fendor strat

most of the time. I hope this is not too long winded so bear with me as i'm a

more dashboard questions

2011-08-08 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Reading this thread has piqued my curiosity around exploring the dashboard.
Unfortunately, I'm having no luck opening it. I've tried F11, and I've tried
going to the dock and pressing enter on Dashboard. In either case I hear the
whooshing sound that used to indicate that the dashboard was opening, but I
don't see any of the widgets. Sorry to ask such a basic question, but can
someone tell me how to open this thing?
thanks,

Unpredictable Reporting of Checkbox State in Audio Hijack Timers

2011-08-08 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

Does anyone else notice this? It takes a few tries to get everything set up for
a weekend day instead of every day or weekdays. The checkboxes are kind of
unpredictable for me. VO will report one state, and when I go back to
double-check them, the state seems to have changed. I'm using VO-spacebar. I
wonder if I should just use spacebar?

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: more dashboard questions

2011-08-08 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

First, it will be F12, not F11, and depending on your keyboard settings you may
or may not need to press the FN key as well. I've found that the Dashboard
reacts much slower than it did in SL so it usually opens within about 2
seconds. Some widgets, like the Weather widget are very accessible yet there
are others like the Flight Status widget that still need some work. You'll
need to figure out which ones work for you and which ones are at all important
to you as well.

Later…

for me, F12 opens the Dock. But it's not the same dock that opens when I press

for the dashboard.. when I use the F12 option, I don't seem to be able to open

When you're on the widget you want to close, hit vo+command+F2. You'll

On that note, does anyone know how to change the city in the weather

Re: web sites using flash

2011-08-08 Thread Chris Blouch
You can look up my previous summary of the issues with Flash and
accessibility but it boils down to no access for Mac and iOS machines
and limited access on Windows, only if pains are taken to make it
accessible. You also limit search engine discover since Flash is not
generally crawlable by Google and others. Today there isn't much that
you can do in Flash which can't be done in HTML so might as well go that
route. They might also want to look into Adobe Edge which is their new
tool for creating Flash like stuff in HTML

Hi Donna,
When you hit F12, try opening the window chooser menu with VO F2 twice.
You might not have any widgets open. You will probably need to access the

what I am assuming.

I personally LO E the stuffing out of Dashboard. Those widgets that are
accessible are very useful, like weather or unit converter, etc., and you can
get new ones and add them to the widget bar (VO F2 twice quickly, or navigate
to the widget bar submenu).

You might also try F4 which, if you have your function keys set, as I do, to
hardware functions first, is simpler than hitting FN F12 or whatever. Let me
know if I can help with Dashboard; a very useful little place.

Re: more dashboard questions

2011-08-08 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
Just to be clear: If your function keys are set to hardware, then you'll have
to hit VO FN F2 twice quickly to enter the dashboard menu. I have not yet
found a way to delete a widget from this approach, but you can always delete
them from the widget folder. The path for the widgets folder you want is
~/library/widgets

Please note for clarity that this is *NOT* the Library folder which is part of
the home /users/(your user name) directory; it's the LIbrary folder that exists
two levels up from that toward the root.

Anyway, you can delete the widgets from that folder.

Ahh, Apple DVD player is starting up when you put in the DVD. This is
normal. I turned that autolaunch stuff off in system preferences under
CDs & DVDs. There is a option called "When you insert a video DVD" which
has a pop up button of options next to it, and one of those options is
"Ignore". Even so, if you quit Apple's DVD player, ripIt should then
give you the options to start copying the disk. I'm not familiar with

main window to focus it. However, how did you work with the rest? The toolbar
gives no buttons. It's just an empty control that you can interact with, but
then one can't do anything there. The rest of the interface looks really simple
and promising though. The rest of the screen is uncluttered and barely contains
anything more than a progress indicator. How do you rip a dvd yourself with it?
 Interested to hear.

Regards,
Paul.

another change in Lion

switched to the downloads folder. I have to manually go to the download folder

Re: looking for an sfv checker

2011-08-08 Thread Chris Blouch
Ahh, my impression was that it was used to validate pieces of a file
which had been split before recombining. I guess it could be used for
anything but that seemed to be the common use case. Could you use the
more common md5 instead? In the terminal you can just type

md5 filename

to get the md5 checksum. You can also do the very popular sha1 checksum
format from the terminal by typing

openssl sha1 filename

From poking around it seems SFV just uses CRC32 checksums which you can
also generate in terminal.

crc32 filename

Hope this helps.

How to copy mp3s from iTunes to thumb drive?

2011-08-08 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I tried to search the group but no joy. I have some mp3s in my iTunes
library which I need to copy to a thumb drive so I can bring them to
my wife's computer for her to attach them to e-mails she is sending.
I was able to copy one file by physically dragging and dropping it
with the limited vision I have. Clearly, that's no way to live. It
seems that while I can copy a file in iTunes, I can't paste it when
i've command tabbed to the appropriate finder window for the thumb
drive. Paste is grayed out in that finder window. I doubt drag and
drop in Snow Leopard will work. What can I do?
thanks,
Kevin

Re: How to copy mp3s from iTunes to thumb drive?

2011-08-08 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Kevin,

Do you know which folder your mp3 files are in? I would open a finder window
with this folder displayed, hit command-c to copy, hit command-n for a new
finder window, find the thumb drive, and paste it in, circumventing ITunes
altogether. You could find out where the actual mp3 files are through Spotlight
or searching on your computer.

i've command tabbed to the appropriate finder window for the thumb
drive. Paste is grayed out in that finder window. I doubt drag and
drop in Snow Leopard will work. What can I do?
thanks,
Kevin

Lion bad Nvidia drivers

2011-08-08 Thread Chris Blouch
Just stumbled upon this article which notes bugs in the video card
driver in OSX 10.7 which can cause some machines to have issues waking
from sleep and other odd behavior. I wonder if this is the cause of some
of the hard to reproduce and/or random VO issues folks have been running
into. Apparently this affects 2010 MacBook Pros running Core i5 and i7
processors and some iMacs. They also note a way to force your machine to
always use the non-Nvidia graphics.

Dashboard quessssstions

2011-08-08 Thread Graham Roby
Hi,

Can someone tell me how to use Dashhboard?

I clicked on it in the doc it opened with a wooshing type sound butafter
that I couldn'tfind anything in there.

All vo could report was image files to do with my wifi printer. There was no
menu bar as in other apps that might have given me help.

Do you have to find and download wigits first before using DB?
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Graham

Hi Graham,

this threw me, too. Once you've heard the whooshing sound, Press VO-F2 twice.
You'll then be able to arrow to the widgets menu, and press Enter to open the
widget you want.
Cheers,
Donna

Item Chooser in Safari, Lion OSx

2011-08-08 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Hi Folks,

Hoping someone can verify my observations with Safari within Lion and the Item
Chooser.

I have noted that the Item Chooser, when exclusively used within Safari, seems
to for an inexplicable reason not pick up all items in the window, even though
the same site in Snow Leopard it does.

Originally I wondered if it was an issue related to content that physically was
being, or was not being, displayed on the screen, yet I have had sighted people
now watch the screen, and despite the link / button being physically visible on
the screen, the Item Chooser still fails to list it.

an example would be:

www.ukbusiness.hsbc.com

there is a logon button at the top right, what is interesting here is that Snow
Leopard Voice Over picks it up in the Item Chooser, not only this, but it
correctly lists it as logon, yet Lion not only fails to register its existence,
but also when I manually navigate to the button using Quick Nav or the
traditional VO arrows, the button is announced as L O G on. Now Lion's Voice
Over is correct here, the button is written out as LOG in caps and on in lower
case, so the pronunciation appears correct, even though SL never bothered with
this distinction, yet, Lion's Item Chooser cannot even recognise the button.

I've noted this behaviour all over the shop, not just with this site but with
hundreds of web-sites...

What is interesting is that it appears to be localised within Safari, as all my
other applications seem to work perfectly with the Item Chooser finding every
button, link, bit of text etc anywhere else.

Has anyone else seen this and do we have a solution yet?

many thanks.

Neil Barnfather

Re: double reading of linked text in safari reader

2011-08-08 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
I used the following link
http://www.macworld.com/article/161585/2011/08/four_changes_id_like_to_see_with_the_apple_tv.html#lsrc.nl_mwnws_h_crawl

to carry out a test with the reader and the double reading of text, versus what
would happen if I entered the reader and then started to read with vo A. In the
instance where the reader opened and article started automatically reading, I
got the double text previously described in other messages, once as plain text,
the second time with the word "link" preceding the linked text. If, however, I
opened the reader and then stopped the reading but did not exit the reader and
resumed reading with vo A, the text read as normal with no doubles, just the
straight reading of text with "link" announced prior to any text links. I hope
that makes sense.

Trackpad

2011-08-08 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hi,

For some reason, my trackpad is acting really weird. I am not touching it, yet
it is acting like I am. It makes the computer either ding, mute voiceover,
change rotor settings, etc, without me touching it. I've restarted twice now,
but still it is happening, and it is a challenge even to type this message. Why
would it be doing this?

This is pretty urgent, so please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Brandon

Mary,

I can confirm this issue no longer happens with Lion.

I used to experience the same problems whilst reading UK online newspapers.

Am pleased to say that annoying issue is now history.

That Macworld article read flawlessly.

Re: web sites using flash

At this time, flash is not accessible on the mac, and Adobe seems to have no

Re: double reading of linked text in safari reader

2011-08-08 Thread Mary Otten
When it finds an article, the reader is a big time saver over moving by header
and finding the start of an article, especially when you get articles that have
a bit of text and then a bunch of junk followed by the full article. One key
combo and the reader opens and reading commences. Very nice.

question about Scan Soft voices

I just got a new computer and though everything was backed up, I seem to have
lost my ScanSoft voices and can't find them, even in the system access speech

neat ScanSoft voices are now history. Is there any way that I can get them
back without complication, as I'm not a computer whiz? Thanks.

not transfer to my IPhone 3GS, no matter how many times I try and sync with it.
IF it starts to transfer, all I get from the IPhone is, Navigon, 2 percent.
What is going on here? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

My apologies

2011-08-08 Thread carlene knight
The only thing I have complained to customer service about is a problem I was
having with ITunes, and I politely let them know that I didn't like the way
that VO navigates the screen; everything is out of place and less convenient,
The layout looks the same to a sighted user, but not to Vo. plus I was having
sluggishness. The latter was because I didn't have enough memory, and my poor
computer couldn't handle the music browser. Yes, I don't always handle change
well, but I can assure you that I haven't complained about anything else to CS
though I have times when VO won't wake up with my computer and it is hard to
start it, both with my old Mini with 2 gigs, and my brand new one with 5 gigs
of Ram. I'll live with it, no problem. Sorry if I complain too much, I
simply replied to a bad thread, and I know that there are some of those. I'll
shut up now. Alex is the best voice ever, and I love my Mac.

IT made the try tone sound, so it apparently took only about five seconds or
so. It simply is not transferring even a byte to the phone.

Misspelled Announcements

2011-08-08 Thread Dan Roy
Ok, I like having vo tell me I misspelled something when I am typing. However,
I am annoyed about it doing so when reading mail. If I turn off the
misspelling indication from the VO utility menu, then, it won't work when I am
typing. Also, if I do a spell check, it won't read properly either. I have
already tried turning off automatic correction from the system preferences
under language, and, it's still doing it. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am, of course, using Lion.

that read beautifully for me using the latest build of webkit and Lion!
However, I have experienced that on some other articles. Honestly though, I
can't remember if it was Lion or SL.

Again, I didn't get any double links when using the reader. I read the article
all the way through. Perhaps, it's time to seriously consider the Apple TV.

Ok, sounds like this item is fixed in Lion. Excellent. Dan, I'm not sure what
you meant in your comment that it is time to consider the Apple tv. What would
the Apple tv have to do with reading an article on the web usiig a Mac?

Nothing, it was the content of the article I was commenting about, just a side
thing and wasn't strictly on topic with the message. I should probably not
have done it!

help with sound studio 4

2011-08-08 Thread Cam
Hi All,

I have just purchased sound Studio 4. I can record and play back files
etc. I want to delete parts of a track. I know I need to set markers,
but I don't know how to pause the audio at the point where I want to
set a marker, and likewise at the point where I want to set another
marker to mark the passage of audio (if this makes sense!) Could
someone please let me know how to pause audio - the guide on
Maccessibility says command P, but this command doesn't work in v4.
