Ahh, my impression was that it was used to validate pieces of a file which had been split before recombining. I guess it could be used for anything but that seemed to be the common use case. Could you use the more common md5 instead? In the terminal you can just type

md5 filename

to get the md5 checksum. You can also do the very popular sha1 checksum format from the terminal by typing

openssl sha1 filename

From poking around it seems SFV just uses CRC32 checksums which you can also generate in terminal.

crc32 filename

Hope this helps.

Huh? I think you're confused, smile. SFV is just a small checksome file that makes sure a set of files is complete and in tact. It doesn't split or join anything.

IS SFV used anymore? Why break a file into lots of little pieces making the user have to jump through all those hoops to reassemble? Can you just find the same file somewhere else that is intact?

Hi, I'm disgruntled with checksome plus because since snow leopard it only lets me create one checksome at a time. I have to restart the program for each checksome I want to to create. Evaluating works just fine but i'm frustrated with the creation procedure. So I've tried ISFV, superSFV, and MacSFV, and I don't like any of them. They work fine for checking but they stink for creating. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
