Re: Calibre

2011-08-03 Thread Daniel Montalvo
You can use the command line if you wish to,but there is a service
that Jonathan Chacon wrote. That services lets you convert any txt
document into epub format (I don't remember if it also handles pdf
format). If you go to the archive you may find one of his post with
the link to download the service.

You can also use Pages to convert documents into Epub, being this
option most complete and customizable. You are able to give the
document a particula structure using the tittles and headings in
pages, and then you can export those marks to the epub file which
makes reading easier.

Best wishes.

Is my Mac able to run Lion?

2011-08-03 Thread Jes Smith
Hi all,
This is what I pulled up from my system profiler. I'm not sure if my Mac
hardware is capable of running lion. I hope it is, because I already paid for
it. I will be disappointed if I have to spend another 1200 bucks on a MacBook
Pro. Anyway, if anyone could look at the hardware specs below and let me know
something I'd appreciate it.

Hardware Overview:

  Model Name: MacBook
  Model Identifier: MacBook5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed: 2.13 GHz
  Number Of Processors: 1
  Total Number Of Cores:2
  L2 Cache: 3 MB

Re: question about viewing calendars in Ical

2011-08-03 Thread Brett C.
Hi Laura,

Navigate to the tool bar, the first button will be calendars. Press that button
a popup will appear with a list of your calendars. You can uncheck the
calendars you don't wish to view, and then hit escape to close the popup.
Repeat the process to make the calendar appear again.

Re: very weird and inconsistant behavior with conversations

2011-08-03 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
If you are in threaded view you do not need to do VO J.

Just find the message you wish to read and press tab and if that does not work,
press VO left or right arrow to get Voice Over to read automatically.

You might not like my next statement, but Mark's method is the best so far as
it works without any fuss and minimal key presses. I know some will not like

for those using garage band and wanting a way to use the score editor

2011-08-03 Thread Yuma Decaux
Here's a link to an interesting app

http://manytricks.com/keymo/

It basically allows you to control and move the mouse.

Now this is not an end to itself as there are tweakings and probably some
sighted assistance necessary at in the first phase , but provided that one is
good enough at figuring a matrix or at least screen boundaries for various
elements, this might do the trick for score editing.

I've been using a terminal command called click where flags like -x and -y
allow you to move the mouse to a specific location on the screen and make a
click, I use it to load presets on vst and au plugins which don't have default
presets available in the garage band pull down menu. It basically allows me to
load presets on inaccessible plugins. I could have ventured further but
figuring all the locations of the plugin and compiling all the scripts for each
location, then binding them to track pad / numpad/key commander is a chore i
just don't have time to indulge in.

However, This little app can take it a step further by specifying divisions on
the screen for a given plugin or a score table.

The procedure seems simpler on a score table as all notes are equally
distanced. Plugins with various elements on the screen might be trickier, but
if there's a way to place the mouse to a given location via the click terminal
command, which itself can be assigned to a shortcut script with either trackpad
numpad or key commander, and the script tells you where you are with the say
applescript command, there can be quite some possibilities in garage band.

Take the note editor. If you know where channel 1's first note is, then you ask
someone to locate the second note and take the x y coordinates, just substract
the second pos to the first one, and you got division distances that can be set
in keymo the application i'm talking about. Add to it an applescript to say
left or right, or don't but each time you do step one division, you can click
the mouse with keymo, and score sheets are an on/off affair, so it's absolute 2
states easy to configure afterwards in the editor for pan, attack, etc.

This might really enhance our garage band experience until they release a
version with accessible score sheets.

On second notice, this technique can also be used for dragging samples from
finder to the garage band virtual keyboard for mapping samples with lion's new
drag and drop feature..

If anyone's interested in figuring it out with me, let me know off list

Thanks, and best

Yuma

Hi, Kliph,

There are several ways to do this. Here's a simple way that I do it.

If you're not using bcc, you can add the first name, then use
command-right-arrow to get to the end of that contact, and type in another.
Repeat as necessary. You can also do the same in the bcc field.

sending private reply; is it still posible

2011-08-03 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi,

Just found that I cannot highlight someone's e-mail address and thus send a
private reply under Lion. At least, not using the method we all used to use.
Is there some other way I might be overlooking?

Re: ugh, darn latest update for safari and sl

2011-08-03 Thread Mary Otten
I found that the option in the safari preferences to highlight items on the web
page using the tab key had become unchecked. I checked it, and that helped for
a while. But I did eventually start having the problem again, while the option
was still checked. I have installed the latest build of webkit and am using
that instead of Safari. It greatly reduced the "busy" problem and the tabbing
problem has also almost gone away. There is one site that still seems to have
problems, but even it is not consistent. So I'd say try webkit and see if that
makes things better.

Hi,

Yes, your system meets the minimum requirements. But I'm curious, since you
already bought it an all, why didn't you just install it and saw what happened?
At worse, the OS would have been sluggish and you could have just went back to

IDK. Just saying. :)

2011-08-03 Thread Ray Foret Jr
I did exactly that. While focused on a message, (I was interacting with the

header group. I interacted with the header group and found the from field. I
found, however, that I could not highlight the sender and that meant that
VO+shift+m did not come up at all. Again, I did interact with the header group
and with the header information itself. I have my headers showing as normal in
the view tab off the prefs window.

Is that what you were doing? Cause it doesn't work for me.

Re: sending private reply; is it still posible

2011-08-03 Thread Chris Westbrook
I think after you interact with the header group you must interact again, or at
least I have to. Then you can vo+right or left arrow between the different
header fields, or just use the arrow keys if quick nab is on.

Re: [Bulk] Re: sending private reply; is it still posible

2011-08-03 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Yep, found solution. Turns out I was attempting to highlight the from field
using command+right arrow as I had done in SL. This time, I used VO+shift+a.
That way worked.

A couple of questions about iTunes and signatures

2011-08-03 Thread Matt Dierckens
Hey all. I have a question about podcasts and ITunes. How would I download old
episodes and sync them to my IPhone?
Also, for some reason, voice over reads my signature twice. Then when I go into
the signatures window, it appears once. Very strange.

Re: A couple of questions about iTunes and signatures

2011-08-03 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hey Matt.
I'm not sure about mail but I can help you with iTunes.
The number of podcasts that you are seeing is most likely because of how many
are on the feed at that time. SOme podcasters only have so many while others
have every last one. Also, make sure you are not using grid view because you
can more easily expand and collapse the different podcasts.
Hope this helps.

Re: Mac mini

2011-08-03 Thread Chris Blouch
I have a DVI to VGA and then a VGA to NTSC converter on my Mini and it
always thinks there is a screen hooked up. Works well and it connects to
our old TV so the kids can watch DVDs on it or whatever. Since NTSC
doesn't provide a way to detect if you're hooked up the Mac always
thinks it is. The mini is the hub of the home theatre setup since it

Re: Mac mini

2011-08-03 Thread John Panarese
Hi Chris,
With this set up of adaptors, can you use the Mini without actually
connecting a monitor for daily, computer use. I am seriously considering
buying a new Mini, and I'd like to be able to do so with the minimum of extras
beyond a keyboard and Magic Trackpad.

Re: Finder and Dashboard driving me crazy

2011-08-03 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Carlene,
Well, spaces and finder has several hotkeys, and you can change all of them via
system preferences, and then keyboard. In the shortcuts tab, select the correct
category and in the other list box you will then have all shortcuts related to
spaces. Besides, it might be that you are accidentally touching the trackpad. A
3 finger swipe right or left will change from one space to the next or previous.

A few questions before buying my first Mac

2011-08-03 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.
I am getting ready to buy my first Mac, a Mini, and I have a few questions.
First, my gift card is with Amazon, and they only have two minis in stock.
The first is a minimum configuration with 2 gig and i5 chipset. The second
has 4 gig, 2 500 gig drives and an i7 chipset, but it is their server
edition. Can I assume the Server OS is pretty much the same as the regular
Lion only with the extra features? Voiceover will run the same?

Second, I want to upgrade to a full 8 gig, and the products Amazon links to
are all "notebook" memory upgrades. Is this the one I would use? They
offer Corsair and Kingston. Guessing the brand really doesn't matter on
this?

And though they mention no mouse or keyboard they don't say anything about
sound. Is there a built-in speaker set with the mini? If not what sort of
audio connection and does anyone have a recommendation as to what sound
accessories work best with the mini?
Thanks.

Recardo,
I was trying to install it. Something is up, the app doesn't launch for some
reason. It acts like it's downloading, but nothing happens. Guess I'll see if
an Apple store around here has a dvd of Lion anywhere, as my AT&T connection
isn't playing well with Apple's App store.

Recommendations for app

2011-08-03 Thread Jenny Wood
Good day all! I writing to find out if any of you might happen to have any
recommendations for an app that wold allow me to move files between my mac and
windows machines. We have one windows machine that we are using specifically
for storage and as our media warehouse, if you will. We keep all of our music
and movies on the windows machine and stream them to the apple TV and other
devices in the house. However, when we use one of the macs to do the ripping,
which is our preferred mode, it seems to be a pain in the rear to get our files
from one platform to another. The easiest way for us would be to either put
the copied files onto an external drive and connect it up to the desired
computer, or grab the files directly over our network connection. I am
currently running Lion on all mac machines and windows 7 on the other machine.
This is still somewhat of a learning experience for me in some respects. :-)

Re: Recommendations for app

2011-08-03 Thread erik burggraaf
I just use command K. It works nicely since I'm using static IP's.

So, I go to finder.
Hit Command K.
Type smb://192.168.1.# and hit enter.
Now I'm connected although depending on how your shares are set up you may need
to enter a username and password.
Now anything on my mac can use the shares on my windows machine.

If your Mac really is freezing, then this isn't happening to me.

Hello Kliph,

Use commas instead of semicolons to separate the addresses.

Don't pay too much attention to the "selection deleted" message, VO also says
this when you select a valid address from your Address book.

Re: USB modem

2011-08-03 Thread Esther
Hi Priscilla,

I don't know about "portable USB modems", but you need a USB modem that
supports 64-bit operation. The Zoom 3095 USB Mini External Modem - USB - 1 x
RJ-11 Phone Line - 56 Kbps appears to be one of these. Here's the Amazon link
(about $46):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FCIOSW/
Please note that I have not tried any of these devices myself. I only
researched this as a follow-up to a discussion question on the Mac-Access list,
as a replacement to the older 32-bit USB modems that Apple used to make, and
that are now discontinued. And as far as I know, you just plug it into a USB
port and it works. At least, the earlier model Zoom modems discussed in the
macintouch.com reader reports sites as being reliable and preferred Mac
alternatives to the old 32-bit Apple USB modems were just plug and play.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: adding more than one recipient?

2011-08-03 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi there!
I'll just like to add!
Open address book with command+option+a then arrow to the name table and
interact scroll down through your list and when you get to a name you wish to
send to just press return!
Keep going through your list until you get to the last name you want!
Do not press the return on the last name!
Now stop interacting and left arrow and you'll have the options to either put
them in BCC, CC or the [to] field!
So which ever you pick then just vo space on it and close the address book
command+w and you'll be on the message header to write subject and so on!
It takes me longer to type this than to do! :]
Anyway just another version!

Re: Mac mini

2011-08-03 Thread Chris Blouch
Right, as far as the Mini knows it is hooked up to a monitor, which
happes to be the VGA to NTSC adapter. I think I paid about $30 for the
VGA to NTSC box. Yup, it was this one:

http://sewelldirect.com/pc-to-tv.asp

It does take a USB port for power but my Mini has four so that was fine.
I also already had an HDMI or displayport to VGA adapter from somewhere
or other. I think they only ship with HDMI to DVI these days.

The end result is the mini stops its fruitless search for a monitor that
isn't there so it can move on to more important things like doing your work.

Re: mac freezing

Hi,

Yes, I just do the same as Anne expressed, pressing cmd-f5, wait a second, do
it again and after repeating this 4 or 5 times, VO begins speaking again. Your
computer is not freezing at all. Just for interest sake, in your Energy Saver
Preferences in System Prefs, check the box that tells your Mac to restart if it
freezes. You'll know if it has frozen because it will restart itself.

Re: A few questions before buying my first Mac

2011-08-03 Thread Chris Blouch
While I don't know as much about the current configs, I do know that
they have a built-in speaker. Not sure there has ever been a Mac that
didn't have some kind of speaker in it. The audio output is a standard
mini headphone jack so your typical PC speakers or whatever will work
fine. It is actually a combo plug which will also accept a mini fiber
optic cable which you can run to an external AV receiver to decode
multi-channel sound such as from a commercial DVD. Works quite well but
I had to hunt online for that fiber optic cable as none of the usual
places (BestBuy, Radio Shack etc) knew what I was talking about. Good
thing I went that route as cables online are generally a lot cheaper.
Here's one for for about $4 from Amazon:

has 4 gig, 2 500 gig drives and an i7 chipset, but it is their server

Thanks.

Re: Using VoiceOver to create a Lion installation drive

2011-08-03 Thread Esther
Hi Jes,

I was able to download Robert's podcast. But his link is a shortened link that
takes you to the web page in which the file is embedded. I'll give you a
shortened link to the actual MP3 file location:
http://bit.ly/qVHjjd
(Note, I don't like posting this way in general, because shortened links can
take you to spam or false web sites -- you have to trust that the poster is not
diverting you -- but the full download link address is so long that it will
almost certainly wrap and break in the mailer).

If you can't download the track directly (because it starts playing in Safari),
press Command+L (to move to the address bar location), followed by
Option+Return (to download the file currently playing).

HTH. Cheers,

Re: Recommendations for app

2011-08-03 Thread Jenny Wood
Thank you very much! Well, I have verified the IP address of my windows
machine, but my mac is unable to connect. I have a feeling there is something
I need to setup on the windows side to correct this. Guess I will need to do
some research into what exactly to change. But this does sound like a much
more economical approach to accomplishing my task. :-)

Gmail and mail not pl;aying nicely with eather other

2011-08-03 Thread matthew Dyer
Hi all,

I am having a problem with mail and gmail. I have filters set up in gmail with
lables for mailing lists such as this for instence. Now I tend to find that
when opening mail and everything opens it is taking mail so long to suync
everything and even at some times loosing mail. I am seeing messages from as
far back as 2 years ago and nothing from the current day or even the day
before. Any one else here having this problem? I did not just start having
this problem until two days ago when I deleted folders off the local porsion of
the machine. I also have tried deleting thd readding it with no luck. I would
start out with as much as 30 or messages then I would leave it and come back
and have maybe 2 or 3 and I did not even tuch. Can I safely say that gmail is
having problems? Or is there a way around this with loosing all of the filters
I have created? I have about 22 lables and filters.

Thanks again for everyones help.

smb://server_ip_address/share_name

Re: Mac mini

2011-08-03 Thread Chris Blouch
Unless somethings changed in the latest models. They seem to poll
endlessly for a monitor until one is found, turning the machine to
sludge in the process. The old trick was to buy a DVI to NTSC cable but
Apple doesn't make them anymore or they stopped fooling the machine. In
any case, the convoluted rats nest of connectors I described does work
but it might not be a whole lot cheaper than a real monitor, although it
will be more portable. You can get a cheapie display for about $80 from
newegg and probably something for a few bucks at a thrift store (old
tube type). If you're good with electronics or know someone who is you
can solder up a "VGA terminator" which makes the 'sense pins' read like
there really is a monitor there by bridging a few of them with
resistors. They used to sell these things online but I guess nobody
needs them much anymore so I couldn't turn up any suppliers.

Re: A few questions before buying my first Mac

2011-08-03 Thread Esther
Hi Bill,

Issues having to do with getting the server version of the Mac Mini with Lion
Server have been getting discussed on at the mac-access list. If there are
only two minis in stock at Amazon, I now understand why Jim Noseworthy opted
for that, although someone else on list did explain that he wanted it for the
i7 chipset and processors.

Bill, if you get the Mac Mini with Server you may have to run and configure the
Server OS software, certainly this will be the case if it ships with Snow
Leopard instead of Lion, and that's more difficult than regular OS X Lion. I
haven't been following the discussion that closely, but I do know that Jim's
made some progress. Just understand that there are extra issues. You have to
buy both the regular Lion Upgrade and the Lion server upgrade if it's got the
Snow Leopard server OS installed. I don't know whether they're shipping with
Lion installed on the models being sold out of Amazon (instead of Apple).

Maybe someone else who has a Mac Mini can give you more information on this.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: sluggishness in booting

2011-08-03 Thread Chris Blouch
Dunno. Worked for me. Have to do a couple heading jumps to get to the
article which starts "Upgrading to Lion Means Embracing the iPad". There
are also a few link boxes stuck in the middle to wade through but
otherwise it's all there. This is on Snow Leopard, not Lion. I did a lot
of VO-Right arrows to get past paragraph breaks and links. So iPad was
one a link and that seems to be where you got stuck. Just VO-right past
it and read on.

Reading with Safari Reader [was Re: sluggishness in booting]

Hi Paul,

Try using Safari Reader (Command-Shift-R) to read the NY Times article. (For
some reason, you're stopping at the linked word "iPad". At least, I assume
your reading stopped at the link, and not because you need to register to read
the site).

Re: Using VoiceOver to create a Lion installation drive

2011-08-03 Thread Esther
Hi Paul,

Option-Return is just a variation of the regular Mac OS X shortcut for
"Option-Click" to force downloading on a highlighted link. I'll point you to
two locations to read more about finding out more about Safari Shortcuts. One
is a link to my archived post of two years ago, where I answered Mike Busboom,
who asked the same question that you asked about Option-Return:
• "TIP: How to use Help and Google Searching to learn about your Mac [was Re:
Latest article on using the Mac from the Braille Monitor]"
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg11063.html

Note that in that article, if you point your browser to:
file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Shortcuts.html
in order to view the internal list of shortcuts within your own Safari
application bundle, that you may have to copy the link (Command-C), then use
Command-L and paste the link (Command-V) into your Safari address bar, then
press Return.

A second good source is the web page list of Safari shortcuts that Doug Lawlor
has been working on:
http://www.douglawlor.com/safari-keyboard-reference

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Awesome, thank you both for your help! I am now successfully connecting to the
windows machine and am able to access my shared folders. Now I just have to
figure out what I am doing wrong when it comes to copying my movie over. LOL I
have tried both copy and paste, as well as dragging and dropping. Copying and
pasting does nothing, and when I drag and drop, I get the error that the marked
item is no longer in view. I understand that it's not in view, but am not sure
how to keep both windows in view. Getting closer though, and that's great! :-)

RE: Changing Internet Providers

2011-08-03 Thread M. Taylor
Chris,

You Wrote:
"I am changing Internet providers and wondered if I needed to delete
mailboxes such as the Mac Cast and Lioncourt.com then put them back when I
have the new provider?"

Chris,
All things being equal, there is no need to remove or change your general
configuration for your mail client just because you are changing Internet
service providers.

There are some definite exceptions to this, however; for example, were you
to change from a cable provider to a DSL or, in some cases, from one
satellite provider to another. More often than not, the change would
require a modification of your SMTP settings, only.

I suggest that:

1.
Before you change providers, go to the web and review the recommended
internet/mail client settings for the new provider. Write these down
somewhere and have them close at hand should any modifications be necessary.

2.
Immediately after the new provider goes live on your system, attempt to send
and receive messages from all your email accounts.

Good Luck,

Mark

Subject: Changing Internet Providers

Hi there,

I am changing Internet providers and wondered if I needed to delete
mailboxes such as the Mac Cast and Lioncourt.com then put them back when I
have the new provider?

Thanks for any answers.

Blubbering in Mail

2011-08-03 Thread Richie Gardenhire
Hi, I have Leopard 10.5.8 on one of my machines. whenever I go to
read a message in Mail, the first few words of the message will repeat
twice. I tried turning Cursor Tracking Off, and it still does it.
I've tried other settings in the Navigation, as well as Verbosity,
menus, and it still does it. Are there other experiments I can try to
work around this? thanks in advance. Richie Gardenhire, Anchorage,
Alaska.

Safari will not play or download the file. I'm wondering if others have seen
this issue? The view count continues to increase so, now it is up to 58 views.

Re: Using VoiceOver to create a Lion installation drive

2011-08-03 Thread Esther

Hi Earle,

On the web page of Robert's link, I had to interact with the "Audio element controller toolbar" and
then after navigating to the "play" button bring up the context menu with VO-Shift-M. Choosing
"Download Audio" here worked.  Trying to use the download link didn't work for me  I also tried to
View the web source page and did a search for the linked mp3 file.  I have my Safari configured with the
Click to Flash extension (and I haven't upgraded to Safari 5.1 yet), if that makes a difference.  I did cc a
response to Robert earlier that the download link didn't seem to be working.

HTH.  Cheers,

Esther

Hi Jes,

I was able to download Robert's podcast. But his link is a shortened link that

(Note, I don't like posting this way in general, because shortened links can
take you to spam or false web sites -- you have to trust that the poster is not

almost certainly wrap and break in the mailer).

If you can't download the track directly (because it starts playing in Safari),
press Command+L (to move to the address bar location), followed by
Option+Return (to download the file currently playing).

Re: Using VoiceOver to create a Lion installation drive

2011-08-03 Thread Esther

Hi Earle,

I'm not sure that I fully answered your question, since you asked about how I got the link to the embedded
mp3 file on Robert's web site, while I described the steps that I took to download the file.  For every file
that you download, if you do a Command-I to "Get Info"on that file in Finder, you can navigate past
"More Info" to the duration, etc. and then to a field that is "Where from:" The next item
gives the source URL of the downloaded file.  So, I used VO-Shift-C to copy the source URL of the downloaded
file, and because this was quite long, I went to the bitly web site to paste the address in and create a
short link. The full URL of the mp3 file was:

So, assuming you can download a file, you can also check what the source URL for that file is.  That feature
has been present for a few versions of Safari. Of course, the other way that you can try to find the source
of embedded mp3 file is to use the "View Source" option (Command-Option-U) for a web page.  Then
you can search near instances of "link" and "mp3".  But that's really messy.

HTH.  Cheers,

Esther

In Case Your Mac Is Lost, How To Add Contact Information To The OS X Lion Login And Lock Screens

2011-08-03 Thread M. Taylor
The following was just posted to the Candle Shore BLOG:

Hello Everyone,

The following instructions from SimpleHelp describes how to add your contact
information to the OS X Lion login and lock Screens in case someone finds
your lost Macintosh.

Mark

HOW TO ADD CONTACT INFO TO THE OS X LOGIN AND LOCK SCREENS

1.
Select the "Apple Button" from the Menu Bar. Select System Preferences. from
the list.

2.
In the Personal section of the System Preferences, locate Security & Privacy
and click it.

3.
Select the General tab, and then, if necessary, click the "Lock" icon in the
bottom-left corner of the window so that you can make changes.

4.
>From here you'll have a number of options, and will have to decide which
ones you want to enable and which you don't need/want.

First things first - place a check in the box labeled Show a message when
the screen is locked:. Then enter the information you want displayed in the
space provided.
Now you may want to enable the Disable automatic login feature. If you do,
that means you'll need to enter your password each time your Mac starts -
and of course your custom message will also be displayed. This way if
someone finds your Mac, they won't be able to access your files (as easily.)
and your contact info will be displayed.

You may also want to enable the Require password after sleep or screen saver
beings. You'll need to enter your password after your screen saver kicks in
(though you can specify the time) - but again, your contact info will be
displayed on the screen.

Once you've made all the changes that best suit your needs, just close out
of the System Preferences.

Now when your Mac starts up (and other scenarios depending on the options
you selected) - your contact information (or whatever message you entered)
will be displayed.

Re: Getting to the top or bottom of a list

2011-08-03 Thread Doug Lawlor
Hi Paul,
You must interact with the messages column then interact with the messages
table. When you interact with the messages column you see two items, Sort by
date and messages. Just interact with the messages table then vo+shift+home
will take you to the top and vo+shift+end will take you to the bottom.

Re: Getting to the top or bottom of a list

2011-08-03 Thread
Or just do like I did, and create a commander key for these actions. It works
for the going to top, but the going to bottom one didn't work out. So I still
have to use the vo plus shift plus end. Although I can say I never want to go
to the bottom of the messages anyways.
