Hi Priscilla,

I don't know about "portable USB modems", but you need a USB modem that
supports 64-bit operation. The Zoom 3095 USB Mini External Modem - USB - 1 x
RJ-11 Phone Line - 56 Kbps appears to be one of these. Here's the Amazon link
(about $46):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FCIOSW/
Please note that I have not tried any of these devices myself. I only
researched this as a follow-up to a discussion question on the Mac-Access list,
as a replacement to the older 32-bit USB modems that Apple used to make, and
that are now discontinued. And as far as I know, you just plug it into a USB
port and it works. At least, the earlier model Zoom modems discussed in the
macintouch.com reader reports sites as being reliable and preferred Mac
alternatives to the old 32-bit Apple USB modems were just plug and play.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
