I just use command K.  It works nicely since I'm using static IP's.

So, I go to finder.
Hit Command K.
Type smb://192.168.1.# and hit enter.
Now I'm connected although depending on how your shares are set up you may need 
to enter a username and password.
Now anything on my mac can use the shares on my windows machine.
