Anyone managed successfully drag and drop with Voiceover?

2011-02-28 Thread Victor Tsaran

Hello all,
I know there are methods for dragging and dropping items with Voiceover,
however, did anyone actually managed to get them work? In particular,
Voiceover tends to cancel the drag-n-drop action once I, say, interact
with an object which I am dragging into.
For example, what would be the steps to drag an item from one table into
another?

Thanks for any help.
Vic

Re: Mac OS X Lion

2011-02-28 Thread Oriol Gómez
I'm trying to install OSX lion on my 2010 macbook pro, and it gives me
an error after preparing to install. Am I dong something wrong? I'm
just installing the system in the same partition as my current one,
macintosh hd.
Should I be doing something different? I didn't make any changes when
I burned the disk image, I simply burned it with disk utility.

Hi.

I use a jabber client which is already on your mac as when I first set

to set up your jabber account as I'm sure he'll be able to help you.

Re: Two questions about Audio Hijack

Hello Darcy,

When I try to interact with the toolbar, VO just beeps at me.

Can I delete the second Skype entry in the usual way, i.e. pressing the
backspace key? I guess I'm afraid to try it without knowing for sure that I
won't irreparably break anything else. :)

Thank you,

Mike

I hope you obtained your copy of Lion legally (i.e. as a developer). If not

know if I did.

If it were a developer version, it seems unlikely he would be asking for help
here and especially when APple provides a lot of information for developers.
Being a beta it may not be possible to install over an existing SL installation.

Re: Anyone managed successfully drag and drop with Voiceover?

2011-02-28 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello Victor.
I use drag and drop all of the time in iTunes to drag and drop music and
playlists on to my iPhone.
Here are the steps I use to do this.
First I move to what I want to drag. Cursor tracking is always on.
Next, I highlight what I want with the mouse by pressing VO + Command + f5. VO
will not always report what is highlighted properly but just ignore it's
ramblings.
THe next thing I will do is press VO +command + shift + space. THis performs a
mouse down command.
Next, I will turn off cursor tracking, navigate to where I wish to drop the
music or playlists. I use the VO and arrow keys to do this since cursor
tracking is turned off.
Finally I will use VO + Command+ F5 to move the mouse to the drop point. You
will here a small wooshing sound if you listen hard enough.
Finally, I'll press VO + Command + Shift + Space to release the mouse and drop
the dragged object.
This works 100% of the time.
This can be a bit tricky to master at first because of the number of steps that
need to be taken.
Please let me know if this helps.
Please note. I've only used this in itunes so Whether or not this works the
same way in other apps I don't know.
Hope this helps.

I did not accuse you of anything at all. I merely made a statement and if you
feel as though I was accusing you of obtaining illegal software, that was not
my intent. There has been such conduct in the past, so merely making a
statement.
Understand it is unusual for a developer to ask such questions in this type of
forum in my opinion.

Hey Mark, or should I call you Rip Van Winkle?

Apple has released a beta of OSX 10.7, also known as Lion.
You can get it by registering as an Apple Developer and paying US $99 for the
OSX dev tools.
If you're not already an Apple Developer, you can get started here:
http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/

Have fun!

waiting on an adapter

2011-02-28 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi:

I have just ordered a new Mac Mini and can't wait to try it out. I saw one at
the store in Chattanooga (a Best Buy store) and was impressed with the overall
responsiveness of VoiceOver. This, in spite of using a high-quality voice,
such as Alex. When I use a high-quality voice on Windows, I get no such
performance.

One small problem.

I don't have a display I can plug in. I have a VGA monitor and have ordered,
after the fact, the mini display port to vga adapter which should allow me to
plug in my monitor once it arrives.

However, it most likely will arrive 3 or more days after the Mac Mini arrives
here.

Mike arrigo has told me, already, that VoiceOver will perform sluggishly
without a display connected.

Mike, feel free to chime in here, if you wish, but, input from other users is
appreciated.

How sluggish will it be. Will it be to the point that I need to go have a
snack while I press arrow keys or perform VO commands, or, can I maybe live
with it for 3 or 4 days?

Have any of you played with this and maybe gotten arround it, at least
temporarily?

Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Mac OS X Lion

2011-02-28 Thread Scott Howell
Mark,

Lion will not be out until sometime during the SUmmer. Apparently Oriol has
obtained a copy that he is attempting to install and having some difficulties.
A developer, there will be resources that will assist him in dealing with
installation problems. If you are a developer you can of course obtain a copy,
but there is a fee to become a developer.

Hi Joseph,

Congrats on your new mini! I have one and love it. Here's one thing you might
consider trying If the sluggishness of VO becomes too painful before your VGA
adapter arrives: If you have a TV or other device with an HDMI input, you might
try connecting it to your mini via the HDMI port that comes standard on the
latest minis. I haven't personally tried to do this as I have a monitor with a
DVI input and so I use the included HDMI to DVI adapter. If you do decide to
try this, here's an Apple knowledgebase article about the mid 2010 mini's HDMI
capabilities:

Thanks.

I would try that, but, our TV is several years old with an F connector.

But, I am going to try running headless for a few days and see what happens.

do you need a screen with a mac?

2011-02-28 Thread Alex Hall

Hi all,
After reading the thread "waiting on an adapter" I am wondering:
do you need a monitor of some kind with a mac to make things work
right? It almost sounded like, without one, vo gets slower and
slower. My Windows pc has almost never had a monitor hooked up,
which is a huge space saver at college and when transporting
things between home and my dorm. Would a mac be able to function
the same way?

Have a great day,

Yep, i tried Sparrow lite and came to the same conclution. You can sorta read

way to contact the developers about this? The feedback form on their site
require that you fill in a captcha without audio.

Re: ripping audio book from cd

2011-02-28 Thread Jane
Doing this just now.

1. Insert CD.

2. If it asks to import tell it no.

3. Go to the table with the tracks and hit command-a to select all.

4. Go to Advanced and arrow down to join tracks.

5. Go back to Advanced and hit create (whatever you have import set to create.)

6. Let it run. iTunes will do tha tlittle chime, then the CD will eventually
stop spinning. Then eject the CD and go to the next one. Repeat all these
steps till the CD is ripped.

Then.

1. Go to the Music library.

2. Locate the tracks you want to change and do command-i on all of them. You
can then make sure the author is set to the correct one and the album title is
set correctly and that the genre is audio book.

2. Then go into Audio books and change track information to put them in order.

Is it possible, and if so, how can I remove the loops in GarageBand?
They just takes place, and clutters up my loop library :(

Just a quick note on Apple's order process

2011-02-28 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi list:

After I ordered my Mac Mini, I called the 800 number to ask a question about
shipping.

In the course of the conversation, the Apple rep told me that, because I had
custom configured my Mini, they do the configuration in China and then ship it
from there.

If I had ordered one without any customization, they would, apparently, have
been able to ship from their warehouse.

Strange!

When I try to type in my phone number, the form won't accept it...

There are different fields for every one of this.
How should I type them to get it work?
I know only my country-code wich is +47 for Norway... :(

This doesn't sound all that strange to me at all. Years ago when working for
Fujitsu our recommended configurations shipped from California and our custom

Re: Just a quick note on Apple's order process

2011-02-28 Thread Esther
Hi,

Just a quick note to state that some simple configurations, such as more
memory, can be handled by staff if you purchase directly from the Apple Store.
Basically, all standard configurations are pre-packaged. However, if you buy a
new laptop and want to max out the memory, an Apple Store can replace the
memory for you and credit you with the difference. Since Apple memory is more
expensive, you might not want to do this unless you are also getting an
educational discount on the purchase -- which would also apply to the memory.
However, this can be a useful feature. This doesn't apply to elements such as
hard drives, and it certainly wouldn't apply to memory upgrades that can't be
handled by a simple substitution. For example, the MacBook Air models require
that your memory be specified at the time of order, and the initial memory
cannot be upgraded, because these modules are hard-socketed in the device. So
if you want to max out memory, you must do so with a custom order. I'm also
not sure whether memory for the Mac Mini's can easily be uprgraded at purchase,
since it requires considerably more work to open the case to access the memory
slot. Finally, I will remind list readers that, at least for the iMac, the
standard keyboard option is now the short version of the keyboard without
number pad. If you want to order your iMac with a full-size keyboard with
number pad, you have to specify this in your online order. It may be possible
to swap for full-size keyboard at the time of purchase if you buy your iMac at
an Apple Store -- I don't know whether this is the case. However, it does
require that they open the box to swap your keyboard, since all pre-boxed iMacs
come with the shorter keyboards.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

So the mini (what I would get were I buying a new machine) requires a

Correct,

For voiceover to work properly you will need to connect a monitor.

Adding RAM to the new Mac Mini [Was Re: Just a quick note on Apple's order process]

2011-02-28 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Esther and All,

I just wanted to add a note to clarify that the new Mac Mini, sometimes called
the "Mid 2010" or "Unibody" model, has a vastly simplified process for adding
and removing RAM. I know the older Minis required putty knives and hammers and
sometimes chainsaws to accomplish this, but now no tools are required.
Here's Apple's knowledgebase article regarding RAM and the Mac Minis:

Apple Keyboard Question

2011-02-28 Thread Richie Gardenhire
I just purchased a new Apple keyboard today and like it very much.
However, I have one question; there are four buttons that are
elongated; two are the up/down volume buttons; one is to stop the
audio stream from playing; press again, and it will resume playing.
the other button does nothing when in Keyboard Practice. What is the
top right hand button? It does nothing or is not explained by
VoiceOver when in Keyboard practice. Richie Gardenhire, Anchorage,
Alaska.

Unfortunately, Microsoft Word is not accessible with Voice Over, if you need a
full office suite, your choices are open office or Apple's iwork suite.

Oh, it will work, it's useable, but you'll get a lot of busy messages at times,
and some apps, such as the dvd player will simply refuse to work without a
monitor attached. You can certainly get it set up though, I actually set mine
up with no monitor attached, since at the time I didn't know this was required.

Re: do you need a screen with a mac?

2011-02-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
The mac mini does need to be connected to a monitor, though the monitor does
not need to be turned on. Most other macs, such as the laptops and imacs,
already have a screen built in, so that's not an issue, I guess the only other
computer that would require this is the mac pro, goodness, those are expensive.

RE: Anyone managed successfully drag and drop with Voiceover?

Subject: Re: Anyone managed successfully drag and drop with Voiceover?

Hello Victor.
I use drag and drop all of the time in iTunes to drag and drop music and
playlists on to my iPhone.
Here are the steps I use to do this.
First I move to what I want to drag. Cursor tracking is always on.
Next, I highlight what I want with the mouse by pressing VO + Command + f5.
VO will not always report what is highlighted properly but just ignore it's
ramblings.
THe next thing I will do is press VO +command + shift + space. THis performs
a mouse down command.
Finally, I'll press VO + Command + Shift + Space to release the mouse and
drop the dragged object.
This works 100% of the time.
This can be a bit tricky to master at first because of the number of steps
that need to be taken.
Please let me know if this helps.
Please note. I've only used this in itunes so Whether or not this works the
same way in other apps I don't know.
Hope this helps.

New Mod intro

2011-02-28 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi everyone:
Just wanted to introduce myself and express my thanks to the mods and you all
for the opportunity to be part of helping to keep the list running smoothly.

I would like to encourage people to remember that as we continue to increase in
number, there's greater potential for overwhelming virtual traffic. Asking
questions, sharing opinions and even differences in opinion are perfectly fine
and encouraged, and certainly good clean humor is pretty much a must when
dealing with the quirks and situations these electronic beasts with voices can
toss at us. I would mention, howeverthat with hundreds reading these
posts, your discretion in terms of what you write is requested. If you have
something of substance to add to a discussion, excellent, it's entirely
welcome. If you are excited and plan to try something being discussed, perhaps
it's best to wait till you've done so and give us the benefit of your results,
rather than the knowledge that you're going out and will do so later. If you
have a one line response to one person, you might ask yourself, "will everyone
or at least more than one person benefit from this input?"

Hope this makes some sense.
Like the other mods, I encourage you to feel free to drop someone a note off
list if you have a response, question or word of thanks specifically for one
person. In this way, we all respect each others time and email constraints,
and also get to know others on a more individual basis.
Also, I encourage you to bring your list concerns to any of the mods, and we'll
do our best to help resolve them.
I can be reached at chaas0...@gmail.com
Again thanks for reading and for the opportunity to help this list continue to
be a valuable resource for all of us.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Haas

Re: one more overdrive question

2011-02-28 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Denise,

That's a bit of a tricky question because different libraries apparently offer
different selections of titles. You might consider starting from OverDrive's
own search page, a link to which I'll paste below. There you can select the
format you're interested in (MP3, WMA, EPUB, etc) and enter various criteria to
search by. Using the example of James Patterson, I searched all libraries for
Creator = Patterson and found zero of his titles in MP3 format but several in
WMA format and a bunch in the unusable Adobe EPUB ebook format. If and when
your search does return a title you're interested in, the search results will
include a list of the libraries carrying that title.

Also on that search page, there is a section to locate libraries in your area
by zip code or name.

Here's the link to Overdrive's search page. BTW, I was able to navigate this
using VO on the Mac:
http://search.overdrive.com/classic/default.asp

Re: blackboard and Safari

2011-02-28 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Carolyn,

I am just now getting used to the newly upgraded version of blackboard at my
college. I don't know of any podcasts are tutorials, probably due to the wide
variety of versions in use. Each new version of Blackboard has changes to the
interface, and therefore the accessibility situation also changes. Some
colleges are still using versions of blackboard from a few years ago due to
the cost of upgrading or the desire to avoid having people trying to relearn
the software.

I'm somewhat familiar with blackboard 7.1, and a little less familiar with the
new version 9.1. I haven't used all of the features in either one, but if one
of these is the one you are concerned with then I can try to answer some of
your questions. I've heard that blackboard version 8 might not be very
accessible at all, but I have no direct experience.

Sorry for the total non-answer, wish I could be more helpful.

Re: unhiding idisk

2011-02-28 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Marlaina,

1. Go to the Finder.
2. Choose the Finder Menu / Preferences.
3. In the Finder Preferences window, interact with the toolbar, navigate to the
"Sidebar" button, and VO Spacebar on that button.
4. Stop interacting with the toolbar, then VO Right Arrow to navigate down the
list of checkboxes representing items available to show in Finder's Sidebar.
5. There you should find an unchecked iDisk. Press the spacebar to check the
box, press Command W to close the Finder Preferences window and you should be
all set.

by way of introduction

2011-02-28 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi:

My name is Joseph Norton, from Dalton, GA.

As i mentioned before, I have just ordered a new Mac Mini and am anxiously
awaiting delivery.

I have long been a DOS and Windows user and have had experience in Linux, most
notably the console mode. While I have recently played around with ORCA under
X-Windows, I have mostly stuck to command-line stuff under Linux.

>From some recent BlindCoolTech podcasts, (Thanks Mike), and from comments of
>other happy Mac users of VoiceOver, I decided the time had come to learn a new
>OS. Also, the fact that I could just go out and buy the computer and not have

>mention the fact that, if I so desire, I can install the OS from scratch,
>without sighted assistance, if I need to--and I probably will do it, just to
>get the feel for it. I may be a bit strange, but, I like to play with
>installing an OS, trying different ways to configure it, and, even see how I
>can have more than one OS on the same machine.

Back a few years ago, I had a machine with Windows 98 SE, Windows XP and Linux.
It was so nice to know that, I had tools for accomplishing different things in
each OS, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. I even had drive images
of different versions of Windows so I could troubleshoot.

One time, for example, I had a friend who spent two hours with AOL tech support
because he could not access the Internet through their service. Since he was
using Windows 95, I used by image of Windows 95 and was able to duplicate his
problem. I was able to tell him how to access hidden older versions of the AOL
software on the CD's they used to send out, which fixed his problem. The AOL
support person did not have a clue what my friend should do. I had him up and
running in 10 minutes or so, after I found out what the problem was.

Now, I hope to add experience with MAC OS to my learnings.

I have seen posts on this list and you all seem to be very helpful. Keep up
the good work. We newbie's out there may need a hint or two along the way. I
have already learned some things I might need to know.

This is probably the longest post from me that you will see. I apologize if I
have taken more time than necessary, but, I will keep it more to the point in
the future.

Again, I can't wait to dive into this new experience.

It's a lot cheaper than a Victor Reader Stream, and it means being able to
do more of what you need to do on one device.

tht's true. the bookshare app also will cause $20 so they would spend $40
in totle for the bookshare and the rfbd apps. Ouch for some of us.

Re: RFB&D Releases RFB&D Audio iOS App

2011-02-28 Thread Tammy Abreu-Butron.com
There is an AP I just purchased for $4.99 from iTunes called read2me that works
with my iTouch. It's limited to google docs and PDF files and has some bugs
but it is a really nice option. I've returned to college after losing most of
my vision suddenly to wet Mac and can still read a bit with enough contrast and
enlargement. As my vision loss progresses I find my remaining vision in my
right eye tires more frequently and quicker than it used to. This little AP
has been a nice addition to my toolbox of visual aids - even though I have to
delete and reinstall whenever it hangs.
I would love to have the company fix the bugs, but am hazard about being able
to load my text book PDFs into google docs and have access to them via my
iTouch either visually or now I can listen when my eye is too tired to read.
