That's interesting, the r600 only takes a max of 4gig ddr2 ram and has a
1.4GHz ULV ltra Low Voltage processor.

It's great how quick something still low powered, can work so brilliantly

Claus,

again, my Toshiba R600 running Windows 7 and with an SSD, is ready to use,
from a cold start, in 17 seconds. this is fully ready, no apps still
loading, JAWS is ready and willing etc.

granted this is with an SSD and a good machine, but it's a point that should
be made. the days when stability of the OS were an issue are really passed
now.

as long as you buy a good manufacturer and don't install all manner of
rubbish software then you shouldn't suffer anymore.

Hi,

On the other hand a stable Windows xP machine is much more common now than
with Windows98 or even worse Windows95. Windows 7 seems to be even more
stable than xp.

Still the Macs really have a boot time I have never seem matched on a
Windows system, and is instant ready after login, very much unlike my XP
machine that uses about 2 extra minutes to load applications. This is only
tolerable because hybernation works on that pc.

When you buy a Mac, you can purchase training at your local apple store for
$100 for a year's worth of training. This has been very helpful..

Two points:

1. On the PC side wit JFW 9+, there was a jaws script to reply
directly to sender (perhaps alt+Y?
2. On the macintosh, if you interact with the headers, andthen when
Voice Over readds the person yyou want to reply to, perform a click
and a menu will appear. I think in Leopard and Tiger, one could hit
VO+shift+M (contextual menu) to do this.

Creating an AppleScript to do this should be fairly easy too.

Hi Simon:
The Mac store does not an Apple store make.:)

Differing requirements, different employees. It would be like going to a
hearing aid dealer who doesn't do audiology testing but just sells hearing
aids.

Probably redundant for me to say this, but you might get on Apple.com and try
the Apple store locator.

to actually select text, but then I'm kind of confused. I assume I
can shift right arrow to select text, but that would probably only
select one character at a time. This seems highly inefficient. Other
 strategies are most welcome.

Re: Selecting a recipient

2010-10-13 Thread GEOFF WAALER
Hi Claus,

This is a good illustration of why its a good idea to do a modicum of testing
prior to posting; reply all does *NOT* work on this list.

Carolyn had a good suggestion. I usually only read messages in the preview
pane, but when I do want to reply to the individual user I'll press enter to
open the message, tab to the from field and use the copy last phrase to
clipboard command (VO-shift-C) to copy it. I then press command-r and erase
the list address and paste the sender's.

 Another question comparing

How can I select a recipient's e-mail address from an open message for
sending a message without reply. What I want to accomplish is to strip out
the e-mail address to paste into the to field of a new message.

This comes useful when I see a message from David to this list, and wish
to respond to David, and not the entire list.

The outlook express equivalent was ault plus one of the num roe numbers
twice quickly, then control a to select, and control c to copy, then
control v on the to field of the new message to paste the address.

Thanks for your help to a newbe.

VoiceOver Utility

2010-10-13 Thread Linda Adams
Hello, everyone. I have gotten my Apple Mac Book working again. Now I want to
experiment with the settings in VoiceOver Utility to get as much shown to me in
a list view as I can do with Apple. I would appreciate knowing the process and
specific keystrokes when I press VO F8. What are the specific keystrokes for
seeing all the categories and all the options? The Getting Started manual says
how the window for each program is organized and which side the buttons are on
and which side the categories are on, but there is no "when you hear this
dialog, press that if you want such and such."

Thank you so much for your help. I think that if I learn what to expect and
what keystrokes I need to use to respond, I can figure out quite a bit on my
own after that.

general Mac questions

2010-10-13 Thread Robert Hooper
As a way of demonstrating my utter inexperience with the Mac operating system
(or my lack of motivation to find certain information with Google), I have a
few questions. My first question regards Mail. Is there a way to jump quickly
to the top or bottom of a table-specifically, the messages table? Barring that,
is there a way to move quickly by larger increments? In Outlook, page up and
page down move by 25 messages, I believe. Likewise, home and end jump straight
to the top or bottom of the message list respectively. The reason I ask is
because I routinely have a large quantity of messages in my Inbox, and I don't
want to start by spending five minutes arrowing to the top of the table.
My next question is regarding using the Web. Captchas-need I say more? On the
Windows side, one would remedy this problem by downloading and using Firefox
with the Web Visum plug-in, which performed OCR on the captcha image and placed
it on the clipboard for convenient pasting into the appropriate edit box. Also,
if you didn't wish to use Firefox, there was usually an audio alternative. I am
trying to create an iChat account on the Mac. Naturally, this requires the use
of the AOL web site. Before I can proceed to create my account, the web site
requires that a captcha be entered. Although they provide an audio alternative,
Safari is completely unable to use it and the link (upon checking) is java
scripted. I know that Firefox is not at all accessible on the Mac side (at
least from the information I received on this list), so are there any
alternatives for captchas? Also web-related, how do I go about obtaining
Webkit-as some seem to think this a better web browsing solution in general?
Your contributions, time, and patience are appreciated.
Thanks:)

Re: VoiceOver Utility

2010-10-13 Thread Colin M
Hi Linda!
When you go into vo utility, you will be on the general settings, just scroll
right and you will be given different options like on mine I've change how my
Mac starts up!
Then when you have tweaked what you want on that setting, go back to where it
says categories table general!
Just interact with it either with on quick nav [ down and right arrows at the
same time ]
or with the command vo+shift+down arrow.
In the table are 9 options scroll down to the next one you want to look at,
then just stop interacting, then you'll be on thats settings, then scroll right
and see what you want to change!
Do not panic! If you are just looking to see what's there and do not change
anything when you come out it will be ok!
So I would have a look at all the options to see where you might want to make
changes!
If you're happy to change something then do so!
And if you're not sure you can always come back to the list!

Re: removing bootcamp partitions

2010-10-13 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi Damon!

Simply go into the Bootcamp Assistant again, and you click continue. Then, you
get two choices. "Create or remove Windows partition" or "Start the Windows
Installer". Obviously, you choose the first choice, select the partition you
want to remove if you have multiple ones and click restore.

That's all there is to it.

messengers

2010-10-13 Thread Damon Fibraio
OK, so I realize that I can do mail on my mac, but what can I do about
accessing aol or msn messengers on the Mac. Here's my deal.

Been using a MacBook pro for a while, mostly booting into win xp using
bootcamp. Well, kind of think I am stupid for doing this, and figured that
maybe it's time to learn mac osx leopard. So, going to remove the bootcamp
partition, at least I think I may do that, not entirely sure, and want to
make sure I can still get on msn or aol. I think there's a program called
adium, but not sure. Haven't gotten very far into this. So, any help you can
give me would be huge. Thanks.

Re: general Mac questions

2010-10-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
1. There are a couple of ways to jump around a table. In all cases
you should be interacting with the table.
1. Use jump cursor mode... VO-shift-J puts you in jump mode, there are
8 combinations you can then use...
1. VO-arrow move to the visible edge in the direction of the arrow.
2. VO-shift-arrow move to the edge of the table in the arrows direction.
2. Use the three finger swipe..
3. Item chooser VOI-I or numpad 1. Will display most elements
available in a list, that shrinks as you type (try Oct) for getting to
October
4. PageUp / PageDown keeys (if on reduced size keyboard, use FN + Up/Down )
5. Use the search functionality, there is always spotlight, and most
Apple programs have a command-f or command-option-f for search.
6. Use "Smart mailboxes" / folders that automatically search for you.
There is an example of all files created in the last week...

Parallels Desktop and accessibility with VO

2010-10-13 Thread Brent Harding
Hi there. I've been looking at running Windows on my Mac to play a couple
games and maybe to do a little streaming, probably with Stationplaylist. I
heard Sara's demo of Fusion and how incredibly bad the audio was almost like
a buffered stream or something. Is Parallels any better in this regard? How
is switching between Mac and the Windows virtual machine handled with
Parallels, and will it create conflicts with Jaws in hot key assignments?
This thing gave me trouble with trying Boot Camp under SL before, it's
probably from late 2007 or 08 and when it tells you to restart with the
Windows disk, it does, but stays on a blank screen with a flashing cursor
and no error no matter how long you wait, with two different XP disks, C on
startup, or any other way of telling it to boot from CD I know of. I called
Apple about this awhile ago, but they won't help me because the warranty I
had (all 6 months of it) when I got the thing used on Ebay was done for
anyways. There's no Apple store in my area. Is there any other way to force
windows xp down this thing since it's the laptop I have and the need is
still around for software that is Win only? I know it's definitely Intel, or
it says it is, never know with stuff you buy used, but it should be. Will I
get the multiple streams or whatever they call that where Jaws can mix with
whatever else I'm doing, running Parallels if I went that way? My dad
suggested that as he knew a guy for this company whose been using that for
awhile now. I don't know that they do much audio from the Windows side, but
I don't know how to take the HD out, stick it in a PC, and install Win XP on
the second partition that way to force it to do what Apple says is
supported.

Thanks.

My next question is regarding using the Web. Captchas-need I say more?
On

the Windows side, one would remedy this problem by downloading and using
Firefox with the Web Visum plug-in, which performed OCR on the captcha
image
and placed it on the clipboard for convenient pasting into the
appropriate
edit box. Also, if you didn't wish to use Firefox, there was usually an
audio alternative. I am trying to create an iChat account on the Mac.
Naturally, this requires the use of the AOL web site. Before I can
proceed
to create my account, the web site requires that a captcha be entered.
Although they provide an audio alternative, Safari is completely unable
to
use it and the link (upon checking) is java scripted. I know that
Firefox

is
not at all accessible on the Mac side (at least from the information I
received on this list), so are there any alternatives for captchas? Also
web-related, how do I go about obtaining Webkit-as some seem to think
this

a
better web browsing solution in general? Your contributions, time, and
patience are appreciated.

Re: general Mac questions / Captchas

2010-10-13 Thread Ray Foret Jr
For me, the answer is this:

www.solona.net

There's a handy tool you can install and run via termin.app which will really
help wi the captcha issue. There's even a process you can do so that, in order
to solve a captcha, you just snap a shot of the screen using shift+command+3
and then press a hot key you define to automatically send the image to Solona
using your Solona ID and password. Thanks to Nickoli, this process is so
painless, it's unbelievable. I personally guarantee it does work.

for example on windoes i am able to do this using the headings list in

Re: messengers

2010-10-13 Thread Eric Oyen
Adium is your program of choice.
I primarily use it for icq and facebook. it supports a number of other chat
protocols including yahoo, google talk, bing, etc). also, you will end up
installing growl. that is a side program designed to make programs (like adium)
a lot more accessible (I use it with skype).

However, you don't need to have growl active with adium, but it certainly helps.

Re: ways of tagging sections in a document

2010-10-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Are you looking for just while the file is open, or for re-occurrence
every time you open the file.

If you are looking for a temporary marker, then hot spots should work.

Also, the VO navigation kekeys for jumping to headers and tables
should work in most applications.

Best regards,

Jon

"empty:" Microsoft word document...

2010-10-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I had a co-worker send me a Microsoft word file with documentation on
a process I am supposed to implement. Jaws however just says "empty
page" for all four pages. I am therefore assuming that screen image
captures were pushed into word. I don't really wnat to ask for a
resend of the document, so using my XP system with JAWS 11, NVDA and
MS office 2003 and my Macintosh with ABBY, iWork, WebKit and latest
version of Snow Leopard, what are the best approaches to get data back
out of the word document and into my mind?

The PC also has "printers" from MS called "Office Document Writer"

Best regards,

Jon

Re: Parallels Desktop and accessibility with VO

2010-10-13 Thread Scott Granados
DO not use parallels, it pretty much sucks the big one in terms of performance
and fusion is much more accessible.

Also, audio is not a problem under fusion. I'm not sure what you heard but I
run tons of apps under fusion at the same time as apps on the Mac and no
problems. Streaming, the TTS for jfw, music, no problems at all.

Next, installing windows is pretty easy. Just follow the prompts in
fusion and you'll be good to go enough to start the internal tts with windows
which will get you going enough to install JFW or Window-eyes (insert your
screen reader of choice).

Enjoy

I know that Firefox
 is
not at all accessible on the Mac side (at least from the information I
received on this list), so are there any alternatives for captchas? Also
web-related, how do I go about obtaining Webkit-as some seem to think this
 a
better web browsing solution in general? Your contributions, time, and
 patience are appreciated.
 Thanks:)

well I don't have the $200 I would need to get it, but I can say that if it

Handytech

2010-10-13 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi guys:
I decided to look more closely at the braille display options offered by
handytech. While on their website, I learned that they have developed their
own manual, workbook and tutorial, as well as a 3 day workshop for learning the
mac with voiceover. I was kind of excited to learn this, as it's another
possible resource,. And I love tracking things down.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experiences with them, the
workshop, or their products. They are beginning to take their workshop on the
road to different states. It would be very cool to get involved with, if there
were enough people in a state to request a workshop.
Any info welcome.

Why not just run Abby Fine Reader on the file? IF that fails, maybe convert it

it's a scanned image ot text) you could then run Abby Fine Reader on it.

Hello Carolyn,
Handytech now sells macs and when you buy one, you get their tutorial for
Macs. they've developed a dvd that they sell for 470 for their training.
they offer workshops as you mentioned. three day workshops on the mac. they
seem to be expanding this all over the country. I hear there's one in
Tennesee either this month or next.

I have their braillino notetaker which I use with my mac.

Subject: Handytech

Hi guys:
I decided to look more closely at the braille display options offered by
handytech. While on their website, I learned that they have developed their
own manual, workbook and tutorial, as well as a 3 day workshop for learning
the mac with voiceover. I was kind of excited to learn this, as it's
another possible resource,. And I love tracking things down.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experiences with them, the
workshop, or their products. They are beginning to take their workshop on
the road to different states. It would be very cool to get involved with,
if there were enough people in a state to request a workshop.

Any info welcome.

Thanks Liam for asking this question. I too, would be interested. I use text

do this for us?

If you have kurzweil1000 on the windows side, just run it through, if
nothing else works. But you should be able to open the file and do a save
as in to another format to read it! My teacher always seem to send me word
docs of a scanned worksheet, annoying! So I sometimes had to run it through

 Thanks:)

Cheree Heppe here:

Yes, well and good for Handy Tech, but

The Apple stores sells a service plan where anyone can get tutoring for $99.00
from any Apple store for I think two years, along with the hardware support
plan. No special anything.

They're just trying to tap into the current rehab-based, rather than the
emerging community-based blindness access using the perceived requirements of a
new paradigm.

We have to allow ourselves into the mainstream community in the tech area,
among others, in order to give real credence to our claims that we are not,
after all, dependent on separate but equal, special, extra training by
carefully selected experts, who thrive based on the separate is necessary
modality.

I would say that the experience you would get from a 3 day intensive workshop
would be quite different from the experience you'd get from a now and then
tutoring at your local Apple store, if you happen to live close enough to one
to make the approach of traveling to and from the store reasonable. I am sure
there is a place for both approaches, intensive workshop and occasional
tutoring. I also venture to guess that the level of vo knowledge at apple
stores is not uniformly wonderful. Even if it is, lots of places don't have
apple stores. We don't. We have a Mac Store, and the people there are not
helpful when it comes to voice over. They're nice; they just don't know much
about it or working with somebody who uses it. When I took my IPod in there the
other day, I had to turn off vo, because the tech could not deal with the IPod
with vo on. Do you want training from a guy like that? Nope.

Re: Accessible Ulternative browzer?

2010-10-13 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Mike,

I'm wondering what sorts of things are you browsing that is causing Safari to
freeze and/or crash. I've seldom, if ever, had safari crash on me. There are
some sites that don't act properly, but never have I had it crash like you're
speaking of.

to answer your question though, you may wish to try Opera. It does actually
read the elements of a web-page and allows some of the VO commands that work in
Safari but there are quite a number of navigation issues as well in my opinion.
Give it a try if you'd like and see how it goes. Other than that, I don't
believe that any other browsers are accessible.

Hi Mike,

I just use webkit as my default browser and don't even worry about safari. They
can't use it as the default just yet because it is still a work in progress.
However, I have been following apple news sites such as apple insider that have
been reporting about private betas of the next free minor update, 10.6.5. It
seems someone posted the beta notes, and it mentioned that safari with
voiceover has been improved. We will see what comes out of that. There have
been 5 betas so this can't be far off.

Re: mp3 vs aac

2010-10-13 Thread Kevin Shaw
For mobile content, you'll be fine with AAC at 128 kbps. This sounds much
better than MP3 at higher frequencies and will fit nicely on a 32 GB iPhone or
iPod.

If you're listening at home or with headphones on a lazy afternoon, AAC at 256
kbps will sound great, even for music with lots of dynamics and detail.

If you want lossless, Apple has its own lossless format. If you're an
audiophile and need absolute transparency with a reduced filesize, this is the
way to go.

I find I have a mix of both lossy and lossless formats in my library. I
reserve my lossless compression for jazz, classical and a few world music CDs.
Everything else is lossy AAC at 256 kbps. If I need to sync my iPhone, I
convert everything to AAC at 128 kbps.

As an audio engineer, I have yet to find a significant deal breaker in terms of
encoding method with AAC. Mp3s are a little too messy for my liking, but 192
kbps and up will do in a pinch.

Cheers,
Kevin

$99.00 from any Apple store for I think two years, along with the hardware
support plan. No special anything.

They're just trying to tap into the current rehab-based, rather than the
emerging community-based blindness access using the perceived requirements
of a new paradigm.

We have to allow ourselves into the mainstream community in the tech area,
among others, in order to give real credence to our claims that we are
not, after all, dependent on separate but equal, special, extra training
by carefully selected experts, who thrive based on the separate is
necessary modality.

Hi guys:
I decided to look more closely at the braille display options offered by
handytech. While on their website, I learned that they have developed
their
own manual, workbook and tutorial, as well as a 3 day workshop for
learning

the mac with voiceover. I was kind of excited to learn this, as it's
another possible resource,. And I love tracking things down.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experiences with them, the
workshop, or their products. They are beginning to take their workshop
on
the road to different states. It would be very cool to get involved
with,

if there were enough people in a state to request a workshop.
Any info welcome.
