alternative vm software

2010-08-14 Thread chad baker
Hi is there any alternative virtual machine software besides fusion?
I'm finding it real sluggish.
I wish virtualbox was accessible.
I want to try bootcamp but i don't have anyone sighted around.
Is there a work around or no?
thanks

Re: Teaching Mac to sighted people

2010-08-14 Thread Esther

Hi Simon,

You can purchase a DRM-free, ePub version of "Mac OS X Snow Leopard:
The Missing Manual" by David Pogue from O'Reilly's eBooks. They sell
their eBooks in multi-format bundles that include PDF files that you
can read in Preview and ePub versions that you can add to your iTunes
Library and read in iBooks on your iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch under
iOS 4). They also have "Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual,
Snow Leopard Edition" by the same author. All the O'Reilly books are
available through Bookshare.org, internationally, although the annual
subscription for users outside of the U.S. is probably the cost of
buying the book from O'Reilly in an eBook bundle that includes an ePub
version. Here's their web site:

http://oreilly.com/ebooks/

You'll need to create an account with log in for your purchases. Once
you buy the eBook bundle, you'll have access to multiple formats of
the book from your log in account. They'll also tell you if the book
has been updated. I'm not sure if this is still valid, but they ran a
promotion for eBook purchases in connection with the iPhone (Stanza
app) last year, and the coupon code "STANZACAT" on checkout gave a 40%
discount.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Snow Leopard, The Missing Manual from OReilly publishers is an
extremely
good book. It describes in detail what the window controls look
like and any

keystrokes, if applicable, etc. I highly recommend it.

RE: a big big problem with a drive

2010-08-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Windows machine is windows vista or windows 7. Then go into start menu, all
programs, accessories then scroll down till you find command prompt. Right
click on the command prompt option, and then from the menu, select run as
administrator.

Then try running the command chkdsk /f on your problem drive.

If it's c drive, you may have to say yes to It being done after the machine
re starts.

I tried that. but it scanned in read only mode when I just typed chkdsk in
the cmd prompt. That's the first step I did but I'll try it again. Oh and I
ran chkdsk throught the windows property dialogue as well. No issues I

Hi.

First of all, I'm going to assume that you don't have a RAID setup. If you
did, you'd likely know about it. So, just ignore those errors. To fix this
error, reboot into Windows, enter cmd.exe and when you get to the prompt,
type "chkdsk /F" and the drive letter Windows assigns to it. Windows will
most likely complain about inconsistent entries in the MFT (similar to old
FAT filesystems on floppy disks or other media.) Go ahead and have Windows
fix those errors. When the process is complete, try mounting the filesystem
again. You shouldn't get any errors at this point. Note that Windows is a
bit conservative about displaying errors--in this case ntfs 3G did you a
favor. While not serious, there is a potential for these errors to become
much more serious over time.

Re: niki plus

2010-08-14 Thread Chris Moore
Hello there,

Nike+ works with any treadmill, in fact you don't even need a treadmill as you
can use it outside too. Nike+ software is on your iPhone or iPod Nano, you
purchase some Nike+ ready trainers and a Nike+ sensor into the left trainer
under the inner sole. As an alternative (and much cheaper one) you could
download iTreadmill for your iPhone. Personally I like the Nike+ system better
as I do not need to keep the phone in my pocket or even touch it once I have
started my workout. Depending on what workout you choose, the coach gives you
regular feedback on your progress.

Out of interest, which treadmill did you get? I have got the York T302 which
enables me to use the built in speakers for the iPhone and the buttons are easy
to feel and remember. Each press of the speed + or - buttons increases or
decreases by 0.2 km, so its easy to work out how many presses I will need to
hit a good walking pace of 6 km per an hour. Prior to the Nike+ I used the
built in timer on the iPhone so I knew how long I had been walking for, well
that was if I was not using the phone to play music or podcasts.

Re: niki plus

2010-08-14 Thread Chris Moore
Hi Michael,

I am not sure how far away the iPhone can be from the sensor in the
sneaker/trainer. My iPhone sits in a docking area on my treadmill, I do not
keep it in my pocket. Nike+ ready footwear has a small pouch located under the
inner sole of the left trainer/sneaker. You lift the inner sole out, gently
remove the foam in the pocket and then replace the foam with the sensor. You
might want to keep the foam filler in case you want to wear the trainers when
you are not training. Every time you walk you are using the battery inside the
sensor, so best to remove the sensor when you are not training, but if you only
wear the trainers for working out then it is fine to leave the sensor in. You
get over 1000 hours of use, so probably about 3 years or so.

I hope this answers your questions.

Re: niki plus

2010-08-14 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Chris.

That's excellent. I've got the Roger Black Gold medal and now all I have to do
is order the Sensor and shoes. If you can tell me where to get these items, if
the shoes are one size as my feet are small. I'm a 37 (sorry for he list to
say this) but I need to know everything before I buy so that's why I'm telling
you Chris. So, do I have to connect the sensor to my I phone and do I just
press the screen on the treadmill to get to know what is happening?

Thanks chris, that will be appreciated.

Kawal.

renaming my macbook

2010-08-14 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi everyone,

Someone recently posted a question about erasing data on a used macbook. Even
though mine is new I got to thinking. Can I rename my Macbook? I read lots of
forums and know I can easily create a new user account as an administrator
under system prefs under accounts. If I change the name of the computer under
sharing will that affect the home folder? Also if I create a new admin
account, how do I copy all my stuff from my current account over? Can I use
TIme Machine? I think I just need to copy the home user folder
over to the new account. Is what I have stated correct? My Macbook has my
first name, last name dashes and it's just so long. Thank you for any
assistance you can provide.

Sincerely,
Allison

Out of interest, which treadmill did you get? I have got the York

and the buttons are easy to feel and remember. Each press of the
speed + or - buttons increases or decreases by 0.2 km, so its easy
to work out how many presses I will need to hit a good walking pace

Very easy to use, I like the calorie target mode. You get regular
prompted updates to tell you how you are doing and if you are
getting close to your target. This saves you having to look/press
the screen to find out what is going on. You then get a summary
of everything at the end of your workout.

So far I am very happy with my purchases.

Re: renaming my macbook

2010-08-14 Thread Pete Nalda
The Computer name is independent from the administrator User Name. The
computer name really only applies to what the machine will be known as on a
network. The home folder is usually named by default as the user name (If I'm
wrong on this I stand corrected). But yeah the computer name only has to do
with networking or sharing.

Hi all,
I have a way to get the information from dropbox. You can not get a menu from
the dropbox application.
What you can do is go to your dropbox folder and do a VO + shift + m.
This will give you a menu. One of the choices is dropbox there is a submenu.
Check it out.

Getting started with the Finder.

2010-08-14 Thread Geoff Waaler

Greetings all,

I tend to learn better from poking around and RTFMing rather than podcasts.
I'm into Chapter 3 of the VoiceOver getting started guide (URL:
http://www.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/ ) and am sure I'm making things
much more complecated and am not interpreting the text correctly, but right
now it feels as though FireSign Theater best summed it up in their ancient
lp: "you can't get there from here".

Once I get past this the rest will hopefully start falling into place, but I
finally reached the point where I need to seek advice here, so for those who
want to follow me in the manual as I try and locate the Skype file I
recently downloaded, here goes:

I will qquote the manual and then delineate my comments with my initials
(GLW).

The text reads:
quote
Note:The instructions below assume that cursor tracking is on, and the
VoiceOver cursor and keyboard focus are tracking each other.

To open a Finder window:
Move to the Dock by pressing VO-D or, if you're using VoiceOver gestures,
double-tap near the bottom edge of the trackpad. Then navigate to the
Finder, which is the first item in the Dock.

Unquote
GLW I verified the suggested settings. VO+D and selecting the first item
works however the trackpad command does not. I closed all active Windows
and took VO focus to the desktop. VO+F1 outputs: "finder. 1 running
application". When I tap near the bottom of my trackpad, VO emits the sound
associated with either boundry reached or "command not supported".

Returning to text:
Quote:
Open the Application Chooser by pressing VO-F1-F1 or, if you're using
VoiceOver gestures, double-tap near the left edge of the trackpad. Choose
Finder in the Application Chooser.

Unquote.
GLW The Application chooser works but again from the desktop with no other
apps open tapping the left edge of my trackpad only emits the out of bounds
bonk.

Quote:
You can also use Mac OS X shortcuts by pressing Command-Tab and then using
the arrow keys to navigate to the Finder.

Unquote
GLW Command+tab causes VO to announce: "finder", but I can not navigate with
either the arrows or VO+arrow keys at this point. Command+w has no affect,
but then the manual states that the Finder is always active.

Quote
If a Finder window was open, you go to that window. Otherwise, you go to the
desktop. In that case, go to the menu bar by pressing VO-M or, if you're
using VoiceOver gestures, double-tapping near the top edge of the trackpad.
Then use the Right Arrow key to navigate to the Finder menu.

Unquote
GLW From that Window I cannot navigate with the arrows, VO+M places me in
the finder menu, but the initial screen is nothing like what is presented
when I press VO+d and select the first dock item. And again pressing near
the top of my trackpad emits the "command not supported" tone.

So far I have workarounds, but after I select list view from the toolbar's
view radio group, the real fun begins.

Quote
When you have selected a view, stop interacting with the view radio group
and the toolbar, and then press VO-Right Arrow to move through the window
until you hear "sidebar."
To move down the list of items in the sidebar, press VO-Down Arrow. When you
hear the item you want, jump to it in the view browser; you can interact
with it.
To jump, press VO-J. If you're using VoiceOver gestures, keep a finger on
the trackpad and press the Control key.

Unquote
GLW I quit interacting with the toolbar and press vo+right arrow. VO
announces sidebar as a table, and since the arrow keys have no affect I
interact with it. The first item (Macintosh hd) is clearly what I want. If
I press vo+down arrow I immediately receive the "finder critical alert"
dialog prompting me to set up a MobileMe account. If I try and explore with
my trackpad and land there that dialog again pops up. VO+j does get me to
the list view as does the control key while touching the trackpad (assuming
I don't accidently flick to MobileMe). I can then expand my account name,
interact with the resulting table, and interact with downloads to find my
Skype file.

But it seems that depending on what I do in my list view, I may have a
different selection active in the sidebar, which means I again have to try
and avoid the MobileMe setup while treversing the table.

I realize that there are many former Windows users here, so this can't be
nearly as cumbersome as I made it. Right now it seems that it takes about
fifty steps to accomplish what I've been doing by pressing Windows+e and
selecting a drive and folder. I am taking into account that anything new
will seem harder and maybe I've got the navigation steps right and they just
become second nature?

If you got this far thanks for your patients and any comments you're willing
to share.
Geoff

Re: Suggestion for making a great VO feature even better.

2010-08-14 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

When I started this thread, I wasn't thinking of the key click feature.
Actually, I would never use it. However, in order to help the accessibility
people at Apple, would it be fair to say that the key clicks you envisage would
sound like the ones that the Mac gives us when we enter secure passwords? I
rather like the fact that these key clicks are issued.

Best to all,

Re: alternative vm software

2010-08-14 Thread Mike Arrigo
If you want the fastest windows experience, boot camp is the way to go, since
all of the processor and memory resources are devoted to windows when using it.
VMware fusion currently is the only accessible virtualization package for the
mac, if you give us more details, we might be able to figure out why it's so
slow for you. From what I've heard, parallels is actually faster than fusion,
but since it's not accessible, and the company is unwilling to correct this, we
can't do much with it.

You can rename the computer itself in the sharing part os system preferences. I
think you can change the name that is displayed, but to actually change the
name of the account, you would need to create a new one, which may be more

Ok let's make it simpler Just do vo shift d to get to he finder then hit cmd
shift h to get to your home directory. Forget entirely about the sidebar. There
are keystrokes for changing view in the finder andi usually go cmd 2 on the
numbers ro for list mode.

to get to your computer from wiht in the finder us cmd shift C and you can move
up and down int eh list.

RE: anything to switch bluetooth connections?

How useable is SL server? I thought it was next to not accessible.

Is this not correct.

Sounds like a good solution. Going to experiment a bit on these as this is
my second day with the kb and waiting on the mac mini to arrive.

Sl server is SL with more functions for networking thats about it. But when
you got loads of media and a dedicated ip there's some fun stuff that can be
done

Thanks for the suggestion

I have compared Parallels and Fusion and have found the latter to be way

Re: Getting started with the Finder.

2010-08-14 Thread erik burggraaf
Uh, well that's a bit verbose. Here's my version. It's a bit wordy too, but
contains more actual information.

Two ways to get to finder, which as you have observed is always open.
One, hold down the commend key and press tab until you hear finder,
or two, Press control Option D to get to the dock.
Press f for finder and then press enter.

I tend to ignore the sidebar and stick to the file browser.

When you enter a finder window you should land directly on the file browser.
Press command shift H to go to the home folder.
Type dow to get to the downloads folder. then type sky to go to your skype
file.

How you navigate the file browser depends slightly on your personal
preferences. You can change the view of the file browser from icon to list to
column by pressing command 1, command two, and command 3 respectively. The
browser behaves differently in all three modes, and you will want to choose the
one that makes you most comfortable.

Personally, I like column mode, command 3. In this mode, up and down arrows
take you through the list of contents of the currently open folder, while left
and right arrows collapse and expand folders.

Backing up completely and taking another totally different direction, you can
easily get to your skype file by pressing command space to bring up the
spotlight, typing skype, and then arrowing down to the file and pressing enter.

Hope this helps,

 Hello Michael,

Although I do not know how this feature would help, who am I to say
that it wouldn't. There are a couple of things, however, that one
 must keep in mind.

 1. There is already some feedback from keyboard entry in the form of
tones. For example when Caps Lock is activated, you get beeps to
 indicate this.

 2. When attempting to enter information in an area information can't
 be entered, the keyboard "chirps."

My concern is that if every single key clicked, then beeped when the
Caps Lock is on, etc., the user might be overwhelmed with too much
feedback. When I originally brought up the idea of having VO emit an
error tone after a word had been written, I wasn't thinking about
anything else than preserving a silent typing environment but still
being notified right away when a word was mis-spelled. To my way of
thinking, this would speed up the editing process for everyone who
wanted to use it and, for those of us who work in multilingual
environments, it would be a great way for the Mac to say: "Hey, you
may want to switch your keyboard to another language!" I have
accidentally written several paragraphs before discovering that I was
writing German texts but hadn't switched my keyboard over to that
keyboard layout. Had this feature that I want been available, I would
have saved myself tons of time and grief more than once.

 Best regards,

 Mike

2010-08-14 Thread Geoff Waaler

Greetings,

Thanks to Sarah and Erik I'm more comfortable with the finder so I copied
the SKYPE disk image file from downloads to applications and can now open it
from there. I gather these dmg files are executable and there's no
installation process necessary after downloading?

Why was "cut" dimmed? Since I copied it to applications do I now have two
45 meg files? I see that command+delete under the file menu is also dimmed
so deleting from downloads does not appear to be an option.

TIA for any info about these files and best regards.

Wo! no no no! don't do that!

1. open the dmg from the downloads folder. another finder window will open.

2. press cmd 2 to get to list mode.

3. copy the skype.app.

4. press cmd shift a to get to applications and paste. Now eject the dmg from
the computer place by

1. going to the computer list with cmd shift C.

2. find the skype.dmg

3. pressing cmd E.

Take care.

Re: dmg files.

2010-08-14 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Geoff,

DMG viles are disk image files. As Sarah said, you copy the appropriate .app
file out of the .dmg file and paste into your applications folder.

Cut is considered destructive and mac OS won't let you do it to files. This is
one of the few irritating things about the mac operating system. In any
event, you need to delete the original if you don't want two copies.
Command delete will probably become available once you eject the disk image as
Sarah Suggested.

Hope this helps,

Re: VmWare Fusion 3.1.1

2010-08-14 Thread Scott Howell
Mike are the volume levels the same? I have reverted back to 3.0.0 because the
audio level when even installing from scratch is 30 to 40% lower than the
volume under 3.0.0. In fact under Fusion 3.0.0, the audio levels were equal. I
am now in discussions with VmWare Support and hopefully they will have some
ideas. They did have me remove VMWare completely and install from scratch. This
did not resolve the issue and I really cannot loose audio to this degree.
So, if I find a solution, I will share with the group.

Another way depending on where you dock is is to go into dock, find
the running application. Arrow right, then VO arrow down to force
quit sometimes that works when the apple menu one doesn't.

Re: Getting started with the Finder.

2010-08-14 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

Let's make one point clear here, in case no one has done it yet.

It is not necessary to use List mode Command-2. It depends entirely which view
you are comfortable with. For example, I use Icon a lot, which is Command-1,
but mostly Column view which is Command-3. There are of course benefits to
either view, and even though you come from Windows which uses the equivalent of
list view in Mac OS X, you might find you might like either of the other views
better. Just something to consider and try out, though I understand, of course,
that since you come from Windows using something familiar might be more
comfortable for now.

Hum, I have this script installed. Had forgotten about it actually, mostly
because it doesn't work here. When I press the keyboard command I set up to
move, it asks whether I want to move a folder or a file.
I Choose folder and it asks which folder I want to move.
I navigate to that folder and press enter and it asks where I want to move to.
I navigate to the folder I want to use as my destination and press enter.
Then the scrip fizzles.
When I look my folder is still in the source location.

Big hum...

I then went into the computer list and located skype.dmg in my downloads

macbook pro with bellkin router

2010-08-14 Thread Josh Kennedy
Hi
I am at a friend's house and he has a bellkin router. My macbook pro refuses to
connect to the bellkin router. It is connected to someone else's linksys router
which is an open network. Can anyone tell me what settings I have to change in
the router to make my macbook pro like it and connect? its set to wpa2 personal
with a password.

Perhaps the router only support 802.11n devices and your 11g mac is
not able to connect to it?
Just a hunch; I haven't really kept ontop of the apple product lines
as of late, so i'm not sure if there shipping with 11n now.

VLC is pretty good. Not everything is labeled but most of the unlabeled stuff
has tags so you can hear the help tags and label them.

Ben,

One question I can answer. The specs for the current MBP line do indicate
that the Airport card supports N.

Best regards.
