Stus-List Viking 34 (like 33) observations?

2014-05-20 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
Hi
While the V34 is not out of the C&C shop it was off their design tables. I am
considering purchasing a well built and cared for diesel V34. I am looking for
props and cons about the design and build.

That is no fun! I know of homes who transitioned off oil heat, had the inside

Hi

Each of these USB ports may have an always on 12v to 6v transformer inside
which may setup a little always on draw. Anyone know?

Has anyone tried a desperate 6 v battery to feed a bunch of bare non
transformer ports, like those found on the front of computer desktop boxes?

Re: Stus-List Anyone remove the helm seat?

2014-07-23 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
On my 29 mark1:
1. Removed seat.
2. Redesigned pushpit curved down with swim access walk through, no gate.
3. Platform extending into and out of boat large enough width room and fore/aft
length to fit the WM mega blue boat seat. This raised me up enough to see and
sit in secured comfort when heeled. Swim ladder folds up providing secure
restraint and backing for the seat with short strops to pushpit on wash side of
ladder
4. BIG wheel so that I can sail from the rail. Smaller when lashed to Bimini
frame as an option on trips. Both wheels lashed to Bimini for Marina and
swimming.

I also redid the engine panel by necessity. This one also has a bank of
breakers for Nav lights, instruments, instrument lights, etc etc.

Re: Stus-List Proper Blower Installation - 30 mki

2015-12-23 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
My fridge compressor/radiator is in the engine compartment. I ran the intake
vent piping to the radiator to get the cooler air. The exhaust vent pipe runs
to forward lowest area of the engine compartment. I upgraded to 4" to Max the
air movement and tried for a quieter exhaust fan. I run exhaust fan separate
from the engine on hot days. There is also a initial PO setup for water cooling
the compressor. The PO disconnected this. I want to try it again. The thruhull
is there waiting for a pipe next summer. The cooler water of the North Channel
is cool even on hot days.

Re: Stus-List Forum vs Email list

2015-03-14 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
The wisdom of the far reaches of the corners of our community is not available
anywhere else nor documented elsewhere. I am in my third C&C and I am a newbie.

Technology changes and transitions in routines loose participants. I so value
the sage elders of C&C boats and sailing that loosing their presence would be a
huge loss for me. There is a vibrant but fragile community here that is immense
and irreplaceable

There are searchable archives now.

As others also do, I belong to other forums Sailing Anarchy, Cruisers, live
aboard, airstream etc etc Some of these work well for me sending new posts
forward as emails...

This works but their communities are fragmented and often without the wisdom
of a quorum of eyes reading.

I keep and stash email gems related to my own ideas of topics and projects.

Right now the list works well for me by directing them all initially into one
C&C folder for reading.

Data driven evidence suggests that a knockdown can separate the elements of a
rail BBQ. Use of said BBQ does work as a sea anchor bit may drag in mud.

Next Steps, probably in order of priority:

 Subject: Stus-List Stereo finally works

After three years my stereo is fully functional. I replaced the old
stereo with a Sony unit after I bought the boat. One of the 2 interior
speakers worked and the 2 cheapo West cockpit speakers worked.
After spending way too much time, I finally figured out that the speaker
wire was to corroded to carry a signal. Initially, I replaced most of the
wire with household wire. DON"T USE HOUSEHOLD SPEAKER WIRE. That lasted
about a season. I finally replaced all of the wire with marine grade
wire. Then I discovered that the rubber around the speaker cones
disintegrated. I bought 5 1/4 inch car speakers that fit into the
enclosures for the cabin speakers, and then found out the cockpit speakers
did't work. Turns out someone twisted and taped the connections. New
 crimp connectors fixed them.

 Finally, 4 working speakers!
Now, need to upgrade the cockpit speakers.

Stus-List Mast Crane Replacement ideas, Pictures and comments Requested

2014-09-22 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
Hi,
While we are chatting about annual mast pulling our club Is looking at a
replacement for our mast crane.

We are looking for a design example/picture that is about 15' higher then most.
We haul out boats out on a marine railing with our cradle on it. The masts are
pulled on dry land while the boat is on the railway.

Descriptions, observations and pictures are appreciated!

I have tested my new cradle on our railway with great success. I will shift the

The question from the sage wise peanut gallery was how much of the boat weight

I have a note on my survey to improve battery locker ventilation. Currently

I think ventilation goals are:

2. Combustible fumes

What is really needed?

What do insurance company surveys require?

Re: Stus-List Viking 34 cradle keel and pad weight distribution?

2014-09-28 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
Chuck

You are one of my sage sailing heros! Your wordly explanation and link to
www.boatstanda.com is very helpful.

The pads are on the bulkheads.

We are railway and cradle mining car boundso boatstands are for warm far
off places...

My revised plan is to set the foreword pads as a best guess for the keel
contact to be midpoint with clearance under the keel tail as well as under the
keel forefoot.

The mid and aft pads will be about an inch off the hull as boat settles.

Just out of the water we have an A frame hoist to pull masts. We stop there,
adjust pads, power wash clean the bottom and pull the mast.

Mast up can not go under the A frame hoist so all masts have always come down.
The hoist lifts from the forward side of the mast. Double and triple rigs have
mast sling challenges LOL which can only resolved with bow deck cows...

Re: Stus-List Replacing Jib Halyard Sheaves on my C&C 29-1

2014-10-13 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
Hi Ian,
M I did this job on my 29-1. Mast down, mast cap off. dollars for Harken
halyard sheaves. The fit required some minor widening and cleaning up of the
cast. This was part of a program to ease halyard control and effort.
Replacement mast base blocks, organizers and clutches added up to a Beach
Holiday just for the parts.

Re: Stus-List OMG! We're dragging!

Hi
I am using iOS Anchor! On iPhone and iPad.

It does
- allow moving the anchor location
- alarm perimeter
- alarm means by visual only, sound only, email and phone or any combination

Can wake one from deep sleep but the scary thought would be depending totally
on this!

Re: Stus-List Voltage Regulators

2015-01-26 Thread D Harben via CnC-List
Hi Wal,
I am talking to a company in Ontario Canada about a charging solution. I run
an essential CPAP for life threatening APNEA so ... cruising with an assured
charging solution is imperative in order to run while on the hook for a week.

Yes, I have bought a used windmill and I am working out solar however ...

This engine charging solution turns my Yanmar into a genset with an alternator
regulator that can automatically change/control the alternator loading from a
35A to 180A so that charging is quicker and does not coke up the engine when on
the hook, yet it can can downsize the alternator load on the engine when
motoring.

This involves changing the belt and pulley, alternator, 2 regulator black
boxes, sensors and control panel.

but the standard install restricted the swing to about 1/2 turn ...
