default mgmt class in existing backups
Folks, one of our nodes was defined with the wrong Default Mgmt Class in it's policy set. Now my questions: - i corrected the def. mgmt class - does this have effect on the existing backups which have _default_ as mgmt class? - is it possible to change the existing backups' mgmt class to a certain one (maybe with SQL stmt)? Reinhold, As soon as the next backup is run, all the files previously backed up, will be bind to the new management class. Best Practice Backup DB and Stgpool Process???
Chaps, I need to know the best procedure to follow with regards to stg pool backups and db backups. Let me tell you what we are doing:- Most of our backups take place overnight between midnight and 6am. (Only a few non-critical during the day). Storage pool backups are taken at 8am (with NO DB backup) Storage pool backups are taken again at 13:00 WITH DB backup (just before our tapes go offsite). Storage pool backup are taken again at 18:00 (with NO DB backup) I understand that you SHOULD take a db backup immediately after storage pool backups, so maybe we should just do the one backup of everything EARLY morning?...The reason I do the db backup IMMEDIATELY before we send the tapes off, is that at least we then know that we can recover up to the time the tapes go off... Anyone have any better recommendations or suggestions?. Bruce, I was ruuning setup directly from the uncompressed archive. I did run instmsiw.exe like you suggested and that part installs fine. It is when I run setup.exe that the problem occurs. I get to choose what language I want then about 30 seconds later the install is "interrupted". I am going to try the install on a virgin NT w/SP6 this morning. Incl/Excl under Aix - not working
Hi everyone, I'm having some doubts as to how Tsm is doing the excludes for AIX. Some info on the environment: Client - AIX 4.3 running Tsm 3.7.2.0 Server - OS/390 2.9 running Tsm 3.7.0.0 My include/exclude list ONLY contains stuff to be excluded - so the bottom to top procedure with a combination of incl/exclude does not pertain here. My exclude has the following lines: exclude.fs /db01 exclude.fs /db02 This is for all our db nodes on an S80. The unsupported command in the dsmc prompt on this client (show inclexcl), shows the filesystems are excluded. The web client shows the files are excluded - BUT - an incremental backup will still backup large files in the db01 file system. Seeing that we have about 2 terabyte of data under these filesystems - and we do not need to back it up - we are having some serious space constraints on the Tsm server. We specifically installed the 3.7.2.0 code to address this issue - before we were running Adsm 3.1.0.8 with the same result. Looking forward to replies. Regards Christo Heuer
Re: Incl/Excl under Aix - not working
Christo - The classic cause of include/exclude not working in Unix is in not locating the INCLExcl specification within the appropriate server stanza. Beyond that I'd need to see your options file and inclexcl file to try to determine what's happening there. Richard Sims, BU
Re: Incl/Excl under Aix - not working
Christo, I'm still on client level 3.1.0.8 and the exclude.fs does not work for me as well. However, "exclude /db01/.../*" does work. Geoff - In AIX, /usr is dominated by program product files, which is to say static stuff rather than transient cruft as in /var. You can use smit and/or lslpp to list installed products and consider what might be uninstalled as unneeded. If you commit uncommitted products that you definitely want, that will dispose of some saved stuff. You can also scan for recent stuff that might be debris as in the following, which seeks files less than a week old and stays within /usr when doing so: find /usr -xdev -mtime -7 -ls Overall, though, you need an AIX person there to be looking after your AIX system: working on root volume group file systems as a casual tourist is dangerous. Re: Does your TDP for Domino inactivation work?
T.Y., When you say you are running full backups daily, are you running the "DOMDSMC SELECTIVE" or "DOMDSMC INCREMENTAL" command? Is the INACTIVATELOGS command running successfully? What is the output from that command? There was one problem when inactivating a large number (more than TXNGROUPMAX) of transaction logs. (APAR IC27138) So, if you have more than TXNGROUPMAX logs to inactivate, the inactivatelogs command will fail. Do you see a failure? This particular problem has been fixed and is FIXTEST 1.1.1.01 of TDP for Domino. You can find this FIXTEST on the FTP.SOFTWARE.IBM.COM website. Re: Does your TDP for Domino inactivation work?
T.Y., Assuming you mean "many ACTIVE month-old transaction logs still sitting in " By a "full daily backup" do you mean a "selective *" ? If so, and you do not have fixtest 1.1.1.01, get it. It should take care of that problem. If you're not running "selective *" daily, then realize that any log containing a transaction for any active DB backup will not be inactivated by the inactivate command. I'm sure you all started with the same knowledge of AIX as me. I know I'm very much lacking in this area, but I got this server dumped on me without any notice. I'm just one of the NT guys and could take care of ADSM/TSM easily if it were on that OS. Unfortunately it's not...or should I say fortunately. Not only do I feel AIX is a better platform for TSM, it has given me a chance to expand my knowledge. From what I can tell AIX is not as widespread as many of the Unix platforms, and I don't know anything about them either, but it still seems like a stable and robust OS. The company has given me an IBM education card that allows me to take as many classes as I want in the next year. I don't know how many I can shove into this pea brain during that time, with all the work I have to do, but I plan on using the first book at least. Hopefully I can learn enough to get comfortable. I'm not one to go off and start mucking around in an area I have no knowledge of. That's why I call AIX support and am constantly asking, what may seem to some, simple little questions. But I'd rather look stupid asking them instead of looking stupid rebuilding something I screwed up because I didn't ask. As always, thanks for all the help. You guys are great. Re: Another AIX question
One place to look for things that are growing in /usr is TSM: If you have TSM accounting turned on, the accounting data goes to /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmaccnt.log by default. That file will continue to grow. There is some way in TSM 3.7, I think, to direct the accounting file to another directory. Or what we do is have a cron script that copies the file off to another place on the 1st of the month, then clears out the one in the server directory. Also the client code, if you have it running, may be creating dsmerror.log and dsmsched.log in the install directory, which is /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin. You can direct those elsewhere by setting options in the dsm.sys file. Re: Defining the drive
>ANR8420E DEFINE DRIVE: An I/O error occurred while accessing drive RMT1. Jim - That usually means that the drive is not free, or maybe not ready. You should physically check the drive for no tape mounted, that it is online, at right SCSI address, all that. You downloaded and installed the ibmtape device driver? Richard
ADSM SCHEDULER
Hi Can someone please let me know why the 'adsm scheduler' would stop for no reason .. especially on an NT4.0 running metaframe/winframe applications.. Thanks in Advance
Re: Defining the drive
James, IF 9st is actually in /dev/rmt (your output only showed up to 2st..) then define the drive this way: def drive 3494lib rmt1 devi=/dev/rmt/9stcn I always use the non-rewinding devicename (goes back to by dump/restore days). I also use device compression. In other words, you need to specify the full path to the device name. Try this: /opt/IBMtape/tapeutil -f/dev/rmt/Xstcn -o qsn -v This will try and open the device to get the serial number and if it fails, then you've got a problem that needs to be resolved on the Solaris side. You can try other IOCTL stuff via tapeutil as well if you want to test further. Make sure /kernel/drv/st.conf does not have any targets for the 3590s as well. Re: Really Dumb Mistake
On top of changing the managemengt class why not install a later version of the TDP. I assume you are still using the connect agent. Installing the TDP version for Exchange will provide you the ifolder option. So no more manuall deletion and a nice clean up of old backups via a little batch script. Michel Palmadesso Jack <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 10/04/2000 04:45:53 PM Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc:(bcc: Michel Engels/BE/Devoteam) Subject: Really Dumb Mistake We are using the ADSM connect agent with one of our exchange servers at a remote location. The level of the connect agent does not have the "autodelete" function to automatically remove older exchange objects. So what we need to do periodically is go into the exchange box and remove the last months backup objects manually. We've been doing this for 3 months but I was getting concerned when none of the tapes were being freed up by expiration and then reclaimed. It never concerned me too much because I knew the library had lots of space. Well after checking the management class for the exchange server I noticed that I had not set up some of the parameters correctly. Specifically "deleted objects" was set to 2 instead of the required 0. Of course this has the effect of keeping all objects because of the way exchange backups work. So now my dilemma is how do I get rid of what I don't want since its already been removed in the connect agent on the exchange box. Delete volume looks like my only option but it makes me a bit nervous because I'm not sure if it will cause any data continuity problems. Anybody have any advise for a dummy. By the way, if an upgrade was made would there be any files from the download that might be still around I could delete? I know you have to delete the executables from NT after you're done. Brainstorming with ADSM 3.1 server in mixed OS390 and VM environm ent
I have an ADSM 3.1 server running on OS390 2.8. The OS390 2.8 machine, a 9672-R45, is running pretty much at capacity. Actually, we've shut down ADSM and find that we are at about 90-95% CPU utilization. Not a lot of room for ADSM. We have a shared DASD environment between our OS390 and VM machines. The VM machine is a 9672-R35 with about 30% CPU capacity to spare. So, my question is Other than ADSM server licensing and software installation, how difficult would it be to install ADSM 3.1 on the VM system and bring it up there using the existing ADSM DBvolumes and Storage Pools? I know there are some issues involving the life expectancy of both ADSM 3.1 and *SM on any VM system. Consider this a brainstorming question. Any suggestions and comments would be most welcome. AW: Help - backups go to tape instead of disc pool, from DB2
Do you backup the DB files as flat files or do you use a TDP agent? We use the TDP agent to backup our ORACLE DB an we had to be careful when setting the DSMO_AVG_SIZE environment variable. We have caching enabled for the disk storage pools so they are always "full". When TDP tries to write to disk it acquires n megabytes (as defined with DSMO_AVG_SIZE) and therefore clears n megabytes of disk space (or maybe more as complete filespaces are removed). When the first n megabytes aren't enough TDP tries to acquire n more megabytes. Unfortunately this time cached space isn't released. As TDP now cannot find the required space on disk the backup data is sent to tape. This is how I was told - now we backup directly to tape Hope this helps Kind regards Thomas Rupp Vorarlberger Illwerke AG MAIL: [EMAIL PROTECTED] TEL:++43/5574/4991-251 FAX:++43/5574/4991-820-8251 > -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- > Von: Lambelet,Rene,VEVEY,FC-SIL/INF. Re: TSM on Solaris
I've installed six or seven Solaris TSM servers. Everyone knows my awesome UNIX capabilities. Legendary, at least in my mind. I love it. The install is very clean. The performance is great. I have not experienced many if any problems with the code once installed and configured. I've worked on sites with both STK and 3494 libraries and no problems with drivers except at one site where they were running 2.8 in 64bit mode. No STK drivers for that so don't try it. Simply backed off to 32 bit Solaris and no problems. We're going to build a STORServer (our bundled TSM solution) on Solaris next spring. Kelly J. Lipp Storage Solutions Specialists, Inc. cleaning
Need help setting up cleaning. I am running TSM 4.1.1 on Windows NT I have a Qualstar 46120 library with four AIT-2 drives. I am trying to set up a cleaning schedule and need some help. First, what is the best way to checkin the cleaner tape? And how many cleanings do you tell TSM that your Cleaner tape can do (assuming it's an AIT-2 drive)? I think the syntax should look something like this, but I am unsure as to what I should be setting the cleanings parameter to: checkin libvolume autolib1 cleanv status=cleaner cleanings=10 checklabel=no Second. The Qualstar 46120 library has specific dedicated slots for cleaner cartridges. How would I take advantage of these slots so not to use up my data cartridge slots? And last but not least. When updating my drives what value should I user for the cleaning frequency so TSM will automatically clean the drives? I don't know the recommended gigabytes for AIT-2 drives. Your help is greatly appreciated. Re: Brainstorming with ADSM 3.1 server in mixed OS390 and VM environm ent
John, a first reaction to this would be that it is possible, but would require a lot of work. Due to the fact that some ADSM DB entries are platform specific, you cannot just move the database between your MVS and VM. The route to follow would be an export of the original server, and an import on the VM system. One advantage in this environment is that you can share DASD, which means that you might be able to use this DASD as export and import medium . For the tape volumes, I believe there will be an issue that you cannot read MVS/ADMS created tapes on a VM system. However, I never got real confirmation for this, so if someone tried it and it works, great. Also, watch out for server levels: this will only work when your ADSM running on MVS is at a lower or equal level that the one available on VM. I think one of my customers tried the reverse scenario by just "moving" the tapes (created a copy storage pool on the VM machine, and used that one to restore it on the MVS side). Didn't receive any feedback if this worked ... . I'll check. >I have an ADSM 3.1 server running on OS390 2.8. The OS390 2.8 machine, a >9672-R45, is running pretty much at capacity. Re: Help - backups go to tape instead of disc pool, from DB2
Rene, Check the size of your DB2 database with the size of your disk storage pool. If *sm sees that it doesn't have enough space in its target pool, it will then go to the next storage pool. I have seen this with DB2, the database exceeded the amount of space in the disk pool so it then asked for a tape to be mounted which was defined to the next storage pool. Archive large list of files
Hello, We have a process that archives a large set of files. We are running into a problem now because the number of files is apparently too great for the command interpretor (shell) to accept as individual arguments. We use this particular method so that we can archive all these files with the same description, and using the same timestamp. Is anyone aware of a method of using an input file to list all the files required to be archived. If not, can we fool the shell by putting double quotes around all the files, essentially using this as one argument only? Any help would be appreciated. -Matt
Archives of directories and management class
I have searched the archives, and I am still a little confused about this. What level of server and client must I be at to have the archive of directories NOT use the management class that has the longest retention? Server info: AIX 4.2.1 (soon to be 4.3.2) ADSM 3.1.2.55 Client info: Various levels on AIX, NT, NOVELL, VMS Thanks in advance... Tom Melton Emory HealthCare Emory University
Re: Brainstorming with ADSM 3.1 server in mixed OS390 and VM environm ent
ADSM on VM uses MDISK (mini-disks) formated with CMS mode 6 (direct to block i/o) and MVS doesn't. (I know, I used ADSM on VM before going to 3466/NSM (AIX). Although VM is OS VOL aware , the last I heard its still READ-ONLY. So how would you propose transferring the binaries for R/W use? Nod ganna dowit. The redeeming factor (I think) is total tape compatibility. So (I think) you can use your current tape pools on MVS over on VM. And you can do a DUMP DB on MVS tape and get it read-in on VM I say "I think" because proof is in the pudding and I don't cook MVS. :-) I would be more adventursum and try transferring the DB by disk-ftp-disk instead. In fact since the file FTP'd would look very much like the MVS file you might actually be able to coax VM to read in the DB backup( flat file from an OS Volume.) Well that's my 'brainstorming'. Hope I wasn't to caustic! :-) hope this helps ! ... joe.f. Exclude list for Windows '98 and Windows NT/2000
We are about to install the TSM client on many Windows '98 and Windows NT/2000 systems. I'd appreciate any pointers to good exclude lists (or the lists themselves) for these two operating systems. I found exclude lists for UNIX in the archives, but had no luck with Windows. Thanks. Richard Snow [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(ADSM v3.1 allowed it in dsm.opt; but that's not the intention of the option.) Default: the Management Class in the active Policy Set. See "Archive files, how to" for example. As of ADSMv3.1 mid-1999 APAR IX89638 (PTF 3.1.0.7), archived directories are not bound to the management class with the longest retention. Richard Sims, BU
Re: Archives of directories and management class
Yep, we are using the archmc parm, and this morning I had an archive run from a client that did specifically use the management class with the longest retention. It looks to me that this APAR was fixed at server level 3.1.2.30. But 3.1.0.7 client code is also mentioned. The way I found this is that I had one management class mis-defined and it was going directly to tapes. Since I am converting from 3490s to 3590Es, I am watching tape usage very very closely. I was done with my migration and this morning I had one new 3490 tape used. The management class used on the archmc parm was to keep the data for 30 days, but the tape MC was for 3 years (and offsite). So what gives? Re: Archives of directories and management class
Ok, I found it (I think). One client was at 3.1.0.6, and that is what caused the high-retention MC. compression
Is it better to compress data from the client or from the server. Please let me know Thanks Perpetua Selva ARBC Dominion Securities Inc. Technical Analyst Global Markets Tel: (416-842-4528) Fax:(416-842-4335)

Re: Archive large list of files
We are working on this problem also. We have Netware servers and there is no HSM client available. So we want to archive and delete all files that have not been accessed in X days. I wrote a perl script that runs on my NT workstation with the Netware volumes attached that searches the target path for old files. It builds a list of these files in a file with the command to archive and delete each one. This file is then called as a macro to perform the work. Ideally, this would be run on the Netware console using its client. But we have found that the client locks up after between 5 and 25 files (5 tries before giving up :). What I am doing now is running the macro on an NT server that has a Netware client. This puts the archives in the NT's filespace, but the archive references the Netware volume name. Not perfect, but it runs. I am using version 3.7.2 and am testing 4.1.1 to see if it works better on the server. The macro looks like this: arc -del -descr="retail 10-05-00" "\\ceanw2\vol1\ceadir\retail\ToddM\data\OracleDoc\DOC\sysman\doc\A48513\rcfa.gif" arc -del -descr="retail 10-05-00" "\\ceanw2\vol1\ceadir\retail\ToddM\data\OracleDoc\DOC\sysman\doc\A48513\rcfa1.gif" arc -del -descr="retail 10-05-00" "\\ceanw2\vol1\ceadir\retail\ToddM\data\OracleDoc\DOC\sysman\doc\A48513\tunea.gif" arc -del -descr="retail 10-05-00" "\\ceanw2\vol1\ceadir\retail\ToddM\data\OracleDoc\DOC\sysman\doc\A48513\metha.gif" arc -del -descr="retail 10-05-00" "\\ceanw2\vol1\ceadir\retail\ToddM\data\OracleDoc\DOC\sysman\doc\A48513\metha1.gif" arc -del -descr="retail 10-05-00" "\\ceanw2\vol1\ceadir\retail\ToddM\data\OracleDoc\DOC\sysman\doc\A48520\ch10a.gif" arc -del -descr="retail 10-05-00" "\\ceanw2\vol1\ceadir\retail\ToddM\data\OracleDoc\DOC\sysman\doc\A48520\ch10a1.gif" The quotes are required if there are spaces in the file names. The perl script is attached to the bottom. Some of my macros are over 20,000 lines long. The operation averages 7.7 seconds per file, so patience is called for. But the load on the server and network is virtually nil. Anyone else out there using TSM with Netware? We are have lots of trouble with it dying. Q Backupsetcontents
Gang, Are the contents of a backupset kept in the database or in the backupset itself? Thanks, Kelly J. Lipp Storage Solutions Specialists, Inc. PO Box 51313 Colorado Springs CO 80949-1313 (719) 531-5926 Fax: (719) 260-5991 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.storsol.com www.storserver.com
Re: Q Backupsetcontents
Kelly, I believe the phrase used with regards to backupsets is "self-describing". I tried this: Created a backupset, sending it to tape. Checked the tape out of the library Issued the Q Backupsetcontent command for that backupset. I saw mount request messages start to appear in the activity log, and if when I cancelled the request, the command failed, as below. ANR8308I 001: DLT volume X00078 is required for use in library OVERLAND; CHECKIN LIBVOLUME required within 56 minutes. ANR2017I Administrator TBYRNE issued command: CANCEL REQUEST 1 ANR8342I Request 001 for volume X00078 canceled by TBYRNE. ANR8342I Request 001 for volume X00078 canceled by TBYRNE. ANR8313E Volume X00078 is not present in library OVERLAND. ANR1402W Mount request denied for volume X00078 - volume unavailable. ANR3517E Send Object Set: Error encountered in accessing data storage - required volume was not mounted. ANR2032E QUERY BACKUPSETCONTENTS: Command failed - internal server error detected. It would be convenient if this information were also stored in the database, but I suspect there would be a performance and database size penalty to pay if this were the case... Hope this helps, Ted Byrne
