James,

IF 9st is actually in /dev/rmt (your output only showed up to 2st..) then
define the drive this way:

def drive 3494lib rmt1 devi=/dev/rmt/9stcn

I always use the non-rewinding devicename (goes back to by dump/restore
days). I also use device compression. In other words, you need to specify
the full path to the device name.

Try this: /opt/IBMtape/tapeutil -f/dev/rmt/Xstcn -o qsn -v

This will try and open the device to get the serial number and if it fails,
then you've got a problem that needs to be resolved on the Solaris side.
You can try other IOCTL stuff via tapeutil as well if you want to test
further.

Make sure /kernel/drv/st.conf does not have any targets for the 3590s as
well.

Subject: Defining the drive

Sorry in my last question I don't think I was specific enough.

I've install a 3494 library on my TSM server. The server runs on a Sun
e10000k

I've defined the library to the server calling it 3494lib

I have 2 3590 drives in the library. I've read the manual where it states
to run the " ls -la /dev/rmt" command, here is my output.

I'm trying to define the device now using the following command: "def drive
3494lib rmt1 device=9st"
I get the following reply: ANR8420E DEFINE DRIVE: An I/O error occurred
while accessing drive RMT1.
ANS8001I Return code 3.
I think that there is something wrong with "device=9st"
Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks,

Jim
