I can't say they are spouting hogwash, it can be done with a pump, but its
soooooooo much easier with a compressor.   One trick is to wrap the
perimeter (tread side, all the way around) with a ratchet strap or similar.
  By pushing down on the tread area, it causes the beads to flair out,
thusly becoming easier to seat up.    Also, yes, either ride or spin them
occasionally and add or change the sealant once or twice a year.

Personally I have one set of tubeless wheels, and while I don't mind them
for me, I hate dealing with them for customers at the PT job at the shop.
I look at tubeless much like I do clipless pedals.   Sooner or later we all
fall over at a stoplight.   Sooner or later you will have a bead slide off,
covering you and your work area with sealant.
