Joen,
Just got a Dell Studio 17" laptop with i5 processor (quad core) for about
900 dollars and 3 year all risks insurance worldwide next business day fix,
500Gb drive and 4Gb memory. It is blindingly fast and the 17" with all the
HDMI and firewire connections etc make it ideal for multimedia. This was
definitely the best PC I found as the equivalent HP model with the same
processor was about 30% more expensive.

It is the only laptop I have found that actually makes my Apple Macbook pro
look fairly slow by comparison. The screen is wonderful to work on as well.
The extra for the i7 processor bumped up the price hence a decision on the
i5 but with more memory. Also the Dell site have good deals/special offers
on if you keep your eye open. In my case the insurance was free but they can
change to free upgrades or peripherals from month to month.

At least I know with the worldwide warranty I will be covered for 3 years no
problem so it even gives the box a retail value if I decide to sell it
before the end of the warranty.

Definitely recommended.

Subject: [NF] Seeking computer purchasing advice

Heya,

Well, my laptop is sorta dying on me, and I've had it for more than six
years (and, even then, it was a refurb). So, now I'm looking for advice on
a replacement for it.

At this point, I'm strongly considering a desktop because of the 'bang for
the buck' factor. I do a lot of stuff on the Internet, a lot of video
watching (and some editing), and - of course - programming (primarily
FoxPro and Java at the moment). I do some rare gaming, but not enough for
it to be a factor. But I'm also looking for a machine that will be
long-lasting, which means that I probably want a good-to-great processor
and high memory.

I know there are people on this list who have purchased a computer more
recently than I have (which was... well, six years ago, I guess), so I'm
seeking advice.

Any advice/comments welcome,

Joel
