Echoing Mike's recommendations. I really like Windows 7 - its like a better XP. Of course they moved everything around (for no good reason that I can determine), so it takes some time getting used to. Extremely stable. I WOULDN'T USE VISTA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. (Had to for one customer project and in the end, customer back ported their systems to XP).
