Joel,

I now go to the local BestBuy for my purchases so I can compare laptops
and workstations in person.

I'm often surprised how much my final decision varies from what I think
I might purchase based on just internet research.

You can also get some good "open box" discounts that can save you $200+.

BestBuy current has HP and Dell 64-bit workstations with 1Tb 7200rpm
SATA drives, 8Gb DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce cards w/1Gb RAM and a bunch of
other 'stuff' (USB ports, media readers, built-in wireless, etc), for
about $800. Reading the reviews, you might want to upgrade to these
workstation's power supplies and optionally upgrade to from Windows 7
Home to Windows 7 Pro (actually I think one of these workstations comes
with Windows 7 Pro by default).

At work we use Sony VPCCW17FX laptops (about $800) with 4Gb RAM
(upgradable to 8Gb), LED displays, 500Gb hard drives. You can buy
cheaper laptops, but these look like MacBooks and have great screens,
keyboards, and mousepads. The only downside so far has been the dual
cores in these laptops don't support 64-bit VMWare software. 32-bit
VMware software works great though, so this hasn't been a hassle.

Good luck and let us know what you finally end up choosing.

Malcolm
