For a completely different perspective: Disposable computers. Three of my current 5 machines (plus one my sister bought recently) have been refurbs bought at Overstock.com. One is my Ubuntu Linux box, another is Vista (W7 sitting here for upgrade) that I use just for testing, another is a netbook I use for traveling and for upstairs (from my basement office -- when SWMBO lets me outta here).
In all cases, the machines have been perfect (in one case I needed to tighten a HD cable), clean, and very cheap. (I don't like development on a laptop. I want multiple big screens.) I tried to set up VMs on one machine for different OS and all of that stuff -- it was OK, but it seemed to me that the time it took to fool with it, and get printer drivers and an internal LAN and all of that stuff set up, it was cheaper and less hassle just to get another box. The 4 machines I use day-to-day (W2K, Ubu, Fista, and Mac) are on a KVM switch.
