Sorry for not deleting all above - wanted to make sure I didn't lose stuff. 
Anyway - I am able to rip tracks off a CD using Grip. Am oalso able to play 
the tracks back again. Looks like the sound card is fine for recording and 
playing back.

Where should I start looking to make sure I have the sound card set up 
properly to record in streamer, lavrec and XawTV? Is it somewhere in my bttv 
setup? Does bttv support Alsa? Should I use OSS? I'm lost at this point.
