Hm, if you don't get sound using xawtv/streamer either, then something's likely wrong with your soundcard driver. First off, to make sure this is the case, could you try using --use-read? If that doesn't make a difference (likely), what kind of sound card do you have, and what driver do you use? Do you have any additional (onboard) soundcards or so? If so, try turning them off in the BIOS to make sure it's not using any of these.
