The --use-read didn't work. I'm using an EnsonIQ1370 card. When I do a lsmod,

Checking the hardware, Belarc Advisor shows the sound card as a Creative 
AudioPCI (ES1370), SB PCI (64/128). Hmmmm, does that mean 2 cards? My PC only 
has one sound card. Anyway - the ens-1370 drivers seem to get the soundcard 
working in xmms, xine, mplayer, ....
