I expect senders on mailing lists (!) to conform to existing etiquette,
if they wish to participate in this particular medium. Modernity does
not factor into it for me.

I personally choose to discard HTML-only messages received via mailing
lists, and I doubt that I am the only one who does this. I believe that
it is in each sender's best interest to either stick to plain text in
order to reach the widest possible audience, or to at least use
"Content-Type: multipart/alternative". RFC 1341 has been around since
1992.

Choices have consequences, that's all there is to it. If a sender values
"pretty" fonts and colours more than the accessibility and reach of
plain text, I am less interested in what they write on mailing lists.
