It seems that indeed we should stick our heads in the sand and
completely ignore what any of the guidelines say.

This is like File->Quit - it makes absolutely no sense but it really

The Windows specific examples contradict this.

No, if we go for ellipsis == dialog, we should not vary on it at all,
with the exception of ones that *may* bring up a dialog, such as "Save".
