Since we haven't quite beaten this horse enough to kill it, I'll throw
this out....another reason I didn't put my tanks in the wings was
because of the increased possibility of a heavy wing, and having to
correct for it while flying. Sure, you can move fuel around during the
flight to keep things on an "even keel", but that's just another thing
to have to worry about, and another thing to make my flying look even
crazier if I'm not paying attention. Yes, this same condition can be
used as an aileron trim control system of a sort, but putting the fuel
in the stub wings minimizes the problem to begin with. I put my "stub
wing header" on the right side, as it will always have some fuel in it,
offsetting the usual pilot weight to some extent.
I have some aluminum tube for tanks, but I doubt I'll install that when
I redo N56ML. I added an 8 gallon outer wing tank for an Airventure Cup
race (so I wouldn't have to refuel mid-race after hours at full
throttle). That was also nice for easily making the Oshkosh trip
non-stop all the way OSH. Having said that, it's also good to get out
and stretch every 2-3 hours, but I really hate giving up the fuel
economy of climbing back to 9500' or 10,500' every time I land. Details
on that tank are at http://www.n56ml.com/900hour/ . It was amazingly
quick and easy to install in the root of the existing wing, as I'm sure
aluminum tubes would be (of the proper diameter). This outer wing tank
is spar to spar, 40" long, and inserted about 8 inches into the inboard
end of the wing. I don't usually keep fuel in this tank for the reasons
mentioned above, but for long hauls like OSH, it's pretty handy.
