We each have our reasons for individual tank design and placement. Mine
was safety, fuel as far from me as possible without adversely affecting
CG. I read many years ago about a KR1 that slammed back to the runway
on takeoff, engine failure possibly, I don't recall. Anyway he hit hard
enough to have the engine rip off the firewall and rupture the fuel
tank. He suddenly had a full tank of fuel in his lap. Lucky beyond
measure that there was no fire.
I have two pumps in series and if one fails I can still draw from either
or both tanks with the remaining pump and in case of electrical system
failure I have the backup system. When I started flying the KR years
ago I drew from both tank simultaneously but after parking on an uneven
ramp several times and not shutting off one tank it cross-fed and left
me with one full and one half empty tank. That will give me a heavy
wing but one easily dealt with. I could turn it 180 degrees on the ramp
and let it level back out or just fly it using fuel from the full tank
until level again. After that I just fly with one tank on at a time and
switch every 30 minutes or so. Never a problem with a heavy wing. I'd
have to get rally dumb and inattentive in flight to get a heavy wing.
With the wing dihedral as fuel is burned off the weight moves closer to
the fuselage.
I tried to make my system as simple as possible with backup and it has
performed well for 750+ hours. Go with what makes you comfortable.
