I own one dress, no skirts. My dress is a floor-length simple
black-velvet affair which I wear to formal gatherings (christmas/new
year parties, etc). I have never (not even once) worn a dress or skirt
to work or to a job interview. In fact, the most "dressy" thing I've
ever worn to a job interview is a pair of black dress pants with a plain
white tshirt and a blazer. All of my other job interviews (all of which
were successful) I wore my typical "clean jeans and a plain tshirt" with
Chuck Taylor All-Stars (aka "Converse") sneakers. A friend of mine
laughed at me once when I bought a new pair of sneakers because I had an
interview the next day. :)
On the other hand, I tend to interview at pretty unique places. Prior
to university and my high-tech career-track, I was a bartender. During
university, I worked either at the campus pub, as a teaching assistant,
or for the university high-tech devel group. My three high-tech jobs
have all been at progressive, relatively small, "startup"-style
companies. I guess I've had a pretty unique experience that way.
Even if more formal attire was required for a job interview, I would
never wear a skirt/dress. I have never really felt comfortable in them,
so if I wore them I'd be all fidgety and it would probably be a horrible
interview. Besides, I'm a big fan of presenting myself as honestly as I
can -- I'm a real "what you see is what you get" sort of person, both
professionally and personally. If a company decideds they don't want to
hire me because I didn't wear a skirt to a job interview...well, chances
are I would have been mind-bendingly unhappy at the company anyhow.
FWIW, I don't wear makeup either, except perhaps a little
mascara/lipstick to the same events I wear the black velvet dress. And
before you think that this is some huge feminist statement or something,
it's not. I just can't stand having that crap on my face. I'm more
than a little obsessive-compulsive that way :)
