Julie,

If a starting balance is off after a previous reconciliation being
correct a possible problem is a transaction having been entered with a
date in a previous period. This can occur with incorrect entry of a
year for example. An amount like $1.44 could be something like a bank
fee if there is no other transaction matching the amount. An
unreconciled transaction in a previous period should show up in either
the debit or credit panes at the top when you open the reconciliation
window.
