If Notepad++ is able to indent XML you could look for a <trn:id> tag at the wrong indentation level. It should be in one level and the top-level element will be <gnc:transaction version=“2.0.0”>
Once you find a backup file that loads you could uncompress that and diff between the good file and bad file.
