Jonathan, I would vote for the theory that the GnuCash installation is as good as possible in a flawed configuration of your Windows operating system.
If you have a decent time window to troubleshoot the problem, one way might be to try to get a stack trace by running GnuCash under GDB as described here: <https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Stack_Trace>. I have tried that in the past when I had other problems with GnuCash and the main issue is that it takes a fair amount of time and concentration to do it.
