I've used RT in this role at various sites for most of the last decade. 
I've looked at alternatives but they never quite seem as good as RT, 
despite its warts.

It has a CLI tool which makes writing scripts to generate reports easy. 
There are plenty of contrib utilities too.

I'm always open to alternatives but so far it's proven it's value.
