We use a combination of nginx (to terminate the ssl) and then haproxy behind
that to do the balancing (http).
Some time in the future we plan to put in another one of these things and
use LVM between them.

You are doing enough SSL to saturate modern CPUs?

I need to look at HAProxy which Tom mentioned. My only real complaint
about LVS is the more complicated network setup required. I always
thought tcp based proxying/layer 7 would really slow things down but
perhaps not.
