I agree. Using h/w load balancers doesn't free you of interesting LB config issues :) I certainly feel that appliances have their uses but they can be very rigid. Custom built boxes are very flexible but you pay a price in setup, configuration & perhaps maintenance. Depending on several factors one or the other may make more sense in a given situation.
