I'm confused about your situation. But if the screen curtain is on and somehow your voice over volume is zero, that scenario sounds to me like your describing, possibly.
Have you tried a 2-finger swipe up to get voice over working and then use the volume up button? I suspect you've tried this and that communication is somewhere in this thread, but just in case you haven't, I'm sending this on. Have you called Apple Accessibility?
