We generally call the system therein a 'switch' (collectively., 'switch gear'). They're not necessarily 'small' buildings, the way the Wiki suggests: I recall that there was one in Manhattan that served nearly 200,000 telephones and was eleven storeys tall. (A fire there in 1975 caused what was arguably telephony's worst service disaster of all time.)
