workgroup to our chosen local name, and home folder shared setup is fine
as verified in /etc/samba/smb.conf. Neither one of these work on Hardy
or Gutsy on this Dell Celeron. In those cases I have to manually edit
smb.conf to get

the install but not bad for this level. I don't much like Alternate but it at

altogether. No keyboard keys do anything, example Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't do
anything, so there's no way to get into the system at all. The only key that
works is power off.

The failure reproduces every time. Command line is available so some other

The good news is with today's 20090704 update karmic 2.6.31-1 boots and
runs on i830 on this Thinkpad R31.
The bad news it is s-l-o-w. Using a video intensive benchmark in this
case GtkPerf from Ubuntu Synaptic:
Intrepid runs in 36.0 seconds
karmic_ runs in 65.8 seconds.
Karmic 2.6.31-1 is 83%
Font smear very much still with us on karmic 2.6.31-1 as updated on
20090704.
Either Ubuntu never picked up the fix from upstream on bugzilla 21415 or
else the fix doesn't work or whatever.
For useful work on this IBM Thinkpad R31 it's still Intrepid which
doesn't smear. Jaunty and karmic do.

karmic 2.6.31-2 just out this evening boots on the Radeon Express 200
with normal Gnome desktop, no vertical bars. Do note however it is not
in KMS mode.
2.6.31-2 on Radeon Mobility 7500 is not in KMS mode either. The
Mobility 700 does run in KMS mode on 2.6.31-1 with no vertical bars.

images rc2, rc3, rc4, currently karmic koala 2.6.30-1.
Perfectly usable as a 2.0 gHz Celeron except for jerky video. I don't
have a flash video benchmark. Extremetuxpenguin runs about 3.1 to 4
frames a second
Option "tiling" "false" fixed the garbage display on glxgears with "uxa"
mentioned in my post on 2009-05-20. Currently running "AccelMethod" "uxa" on
karmic from sources.list, linux-image 2.6.30-2.

Installed 2.7.0 driver as reported by Xorg.0.log. I was able to run GtkPerf
three times O.K., fonts O.K. Then I startedl firefox and over half the fonts
in this message are big black blotches.
For what it is worth, GtkPerf was about 2% faster with 2.7.0 than 2.6.3
however it doesn't me

Sure is an issue on IBM Thinkpad R31 i830, updated to rc4 etc. Run GtkPerf a
couple of times and text is essentially black blotches and unreadable. Let me
give the 2.7.0 driver a try. It's using 2.6.3 driver now.
Jaunty's running well otherwise, however I do get an occasional hang for
Bryce, I tried the x-freeze-test however this command:
sudo INTEL_DEBUG=batch /etc/init.d/gdm restart
results in a black screen. I can do Ctrl-Alt-F1 however I couldn't get
any x display started.

IBM Thinkpad R31 with i830 integrated graphics is just about unreadable with
jaunty after a few minutes. Intrepid no problem at all. Jaunty performance
generally good, a bit jerky with flash small window, jerky on full screen
flash. As I writhe this note, most characters in what I'm typing ar

Note, about once a day the laptop freezes up on jaunty rc4. Does not on
Intrepid. Has not this morning.

CD Live 20081016 still boots to black screen.
It will boot using workaround in previous comment.
Install does run because it doesn't use compiz, however the installed
Ubunto gets the same fatal hang as CD Live. Boot in rescue mode and
remove compiz, then it runs.
Since this bug is rated "low"

Personal opinion, having been pagued by this problem since August 13:
1. Compiz developers being so fascinated by new "eye candy" tricks on high end
hardware they forgot about the base of people out there ru
How many other paths are only used by Compiz? If paths are only used by
Compiz, then are all intended customer machines checked as a matter of
course by the only user?

On my dead stock completely working Compaq Presario with nothing but
Ubuntu's on it, Intrepid Beta CD Live reboot or shutdown opens & closes
so quick I can't get the CD out, and even after pushing enter won't let
me remove the diskette, not until reboot resets the computer or until I
power on afte
As of 200891016 build still fails, both CD Live and installed. I can't
do a CD on 20081019 or 20081020 because of oversize. I don't know how
to overburn to squeeze 701.6 onto a 700 CD, nor do I know how to remove
Gnome games from the iso.
On 200816 I was able to get CD Live to boot by watching f
CD Live Intrepid has been too big to fit on a 700 mb CD for the last 3
days so I did this test:
1. Boot installed Intrepid with compiz removed but with all the latest updates
from the internet. O.K.
2. sudo apt-get install compiz. Note, Visual Effects are set to none. Still
running.

Updated Compiz today Oct 11 on Intrepid Beta. PC hUpdated Compiz today
on Intrepid Beta. PC hangs with black screen and frozen spinner at just
the point Gnome should display the desktop.
I'm back to using xfce4 on Ubuntu because I haven't found a clean way to
replace Compiz with Metacity. Anyone

Daily Build 20071014 CD Live still fails. Boots to black screen where
Gnome desktop should load.
Found a workaround:
Boot CD Live
Watch for X to initialize
Ctrl-Alt-F1(timing dependent, might have to do it a few times)
sudo killall gdm
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-co
For a number of people (like me) the failure occurs so soon login &
Alt+F2 can't be issued.
The metacity --replace & is only temporary and must be repeated on each
boot.

My synaptic repositories are already set up for Pre-released updates (intrepid
proposed) so I just cranked up a terminal and did
sudo apt-get install compiz
and as far as I can tell it got all those packages and a few more. I copied
the screen messages if anyone is interested.
