I ran out of ideas on how to investigate this bug, so I downloaded Alternate KarmicA2 and installed that. This is it running now. A few kinks on the install but not bad for this level. I don't much like Alternate but it at least boots! The desktop karmic A2's don't on this i845g.
Both the original Karmic A2 and Daily Build 20090615 still fail as described in this bug, so if anyone wants anything tried or how to get more info please let me know.
