distribution of my liking on a Fujitsu machine with Core i3. I chose the
64bit Xubuntu 12.04 LTS version and tweaked it by running "compiz" and

Disabling 'sync to vblank' hasn't worked for me at all. Certain
screensavers (Fuzzy Flakes, GLText, and occasionally AntSpotlight,
GLBlur, and possibly one or two others) keep crashing while others seem
to be fine. I'm at a loss at this point.

That is true, the PC does not completely freeze. The arrow of the mouse
moves well, but the mouse clicks are not registered.
The keyboard doesn't work either (apart from the key combinations to
open consoles like CTRL + Alt + F1).

dosbox. In dosbox the solution was to change the config file from direct
to opengl. I'm not sure if this is useful, but maybe.

Happened again, this time while typing a Gmail. I tried the
sync_to_vblank trick and that seems to reduce the number of freezes, but
it does not eliminate them.
Before it crashed, computer had been on for 24 hours, at various times
Suspended and under a blank screensaver.

FWIW: Sean Fenton's advice about disabling sync_to_vblank in gconf-
editor seems to have done the trick: I just left my laptop on overnight
with Transmission running (which was a recipe to activate the bug) and
it came back no problem.
The key location is:
/apps/compiz-1/plugins/opengl/screen0/
Same bug happening also on H67 + 2500k Sandybridge. Kill compiz from
command line fixed it.

I have found that the Sync to vblank option works *very *briefly.
While it seems to be effective at first, in my case, the problem reoccurs
after about 24 hours.

I'll go ahead and try this as well. I just found out that it still
happens without screensaver. I use a small script to use my computer as
an alarm it uses the following:
rtcwake
pm-suspend
xset dpms force off
Not sure which one is causing it to still happen but I'll try disabling VBlank.

I think the cause of this bug was misunderstood by someone.
I also get hanging after screen goes blank in 11.04 (natty) but switching to
VT1 and killing gnome-screensaver doesn't help (and I don't even think it's the
cause).
Every time I notice this problem the last line of Xorg.0.log was like:
ThinkPad T500, Natty 64bit: I turned off the screensaver entirely & set
the screen to sleep after 5min. Now it doesn't lock up every time, but
still locks up. Often, the screen will wake up & the GUI will all be
frozen.
I just tried the "Alt + SysRq + r + s + e + i + u + b" trick & it
wouldn't reb
I don't think it's a screensaver problem. Even disabling screensaver,
when the screen goes down because of inactivity the screen freezes. In a
tty, if I kill Xorg, the screen restores and I can log in again, but
with a new session and all my work is lost

More info: after several tries, with only the Unity desktop running and
letting the machine sit for approx 20 minutes with the lid closed, the
screen kept flickering between the unlock screen and the blank desktop.
I ran a ps -eaf from a virtual termial and saw a line related to the
lock screen, b
Additional note: Switching to the Blank screensaver did not make a
difference, though it seems to be correlated to having the lid of my
laptop closed for approx 20 minutes, and it is more noticable if I have
things running onscreen when it happens.
Manually killing gnome-screensaver and compiz do

I have also experienced the same problem on my Sony VAIO (VGN22E), It
happened both in Ubuntu and Ubuntu classic desktop. It was the floating
ubuntu logo and matrix screensavers that I have tried so far.
