Well, looks like the power manager tweak didn't eliminate it after all. However, I'm now starting to suspect full-screen video as a contributing factor, as my most recent "freeze" happened only after I watched a full- screen video for the first time since the power-manager tweak, and I had had inklings that full-screen video might be involved even before that tweak.
I'll try to run some more tests over the next few days...
