Happened again, this time while typing a Gmail. I tried the sync_to_vblank trick and that seems to reduce the number of freezes, but it does not eliminate them.
Before it crashed, computer had been on for 24 hours, at various times Suspended and under a blank screensaver. Only thing that worked was the power switch. But when I rebooted my old theme was gone and a new one in its place. I had not changed themes previously and did no updates.
