nautilus and then restart it, after pugging in the external monitor. If

This bug was fixed long ago. Except for a problem adjusting the screen
brightness in suspend/resume (reported in a separate bug), stock kernels
in Oneiric and Precise both work wonderfully on this laptop, these days.

I've tried that in the past with no success.
It's worth noting that toshset uses a different kernel module than the
Ubuntu installer sets up by default. By default, I have the
toshiba_acpi.ki module loaded. I've built and installed the correct
module for toshset, but it didn't seem to work any b
(I removed toshset and the related kernel module after proving to myself
that it wasn't a solution. My current configuration has just the stock
toshiba_acpi module that the Ubuntu installer pulled in.)
