Public bug reported: First off, let me say I love the new Unity/Gnome interface. The interaction with the switcher is first-rate, and the way the virtual desktops are integrated is first rate! And it's one of the few interfaces that I've seen that seems to serve novice users and expert users well, and one of the interfaces for virtual desktop systems that I've used. I love it! Great job!
It seems to work almost perfectly on my laptop without an external monitor attached. I have a laptop with an external display attached. The external display is higher resolution, and is physically located above the laptop. The new Unity interface works better than the old Unity interface in the multi-monitor configuration, but I have noticed a few weirdnesses: 1. Virtual Desktops only apply to the "primary" display. At first glance it seems like the virtual desktops system is incompletely implemented, but I actually find switching virtual desktops on only one monitor to be fairly useful -- so I'd love it if each monitor could be on different virtual desktops so that I can mix and match. The new Unity interface is one of the few interfaces that can actually handle this without being hard to use. 2. When I don't have a monitor attached, and have a bunch of windows sorted according to desktops on my laptop display, all of the windows are dumped into a single workspace when I plug in the external (marked as primary) monitor. 3. I set the external (top) display to be the "primary" display (with the menu bar) when I'm connected to the monitor, since it makes more sense to have the menu bar (and the "Activities" hot corner) at the top of my desktop-area. 4. There's a Nautilus menu bar at the top of my bottom screen. If you have to put something there, it's a good choice but, since my monitors are stacked vertically, I don't feel like you have to have something there. 5. When I had the smaller laptop display as the "primary" display, I had trouble moving windows -- there was some sort of hidden grid. Anyway, many thanks for the great great work! It's rare for me to be enthusiastic about any GUI, especially a new one, but you folks have done a great job! And, after 15 years of having a Windows key, it's the first time that I've seen it used correctly! :-) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu7 Uname: Linux 3.1.0-0301rc9-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu3 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: None Date: Fri Oct 14 09:37:10 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: oneiric DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: virtualbox, 4.1.2, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installed virtualbox, 4.1.2, 3.1.0-0301rc9-generic, x86_64: installed ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, whatever it takes to get this fixed in Ubuntu GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0116] (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:0005] MachineType: TOSHIBA PORTEGE R835 PlymouthDebug: Error: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/plymouth-debug.log' ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.1.0-0301rc9-generic root=UUID=d046bba5-6bff-42e7-ae6e-afcab4507acb ro quiet splash resume=UUID=7c62d4f9-0ff6-4fc6-9666-2f70193d0c45 vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 08/25/2011 dmi.bios.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.bios.version: Version 3.10 dmi.board.asset.tag: 0000000000 dmi.board.name: Portable PC dmi.board.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.board.version: Version A0 dmi.chassis.asset.tag: 0000000000 dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.chassis.version: Version 1.0 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnTOSHIBA:bvrVersion3.10:bd08/25/2011:svnTOSHIBA:pnPORTEGER835:pvrPT324U-008003:rvnTOSHIBA:rnPortablePC:rvrVersionA0:cvnTOSHIBA:ct10:cvrVersion1.0: dmi.product.name: PORTEGE R835 dmi.product.version: PT324U-008003 dmi.sys.vendor: TOSHIBA version.compiz: compiz 1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu3 version.ia32-libs: ia32-libs 20090808ubuntu26 version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.26-1ubuntu1 version.libgl1-mesa-dri: libgl1-mesa-dri 7.11-0ubuntu3 version.libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental N/A version.libgl1-mesa-glx: libgl1-mesa-glx 7.11-0ubuntu3 version.xserver-xorg: xserver-xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu7 version.xserver-xorg-input-evdev: xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu13 version.xserver-xorg-video-ati: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.14.99~git20110811.g93fc084-0ubuntu1 version.xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.15.901-1ubuntu2 version.xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20110411+8378443-1 ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug oneiric ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874304 Title: Unity/Compiz multi-monitor and Virtual Desktop Gotchas To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/874304/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
