I finally found the solution to the problem I posted nearly three years ago:

records blank), but I thought that it was relevant. Andrea had a similar
problem as in my thread.

I finally disabled the on-board sound card and got back to my old
Ensoniq 1371 (long live it!). No more problems, except for a "device
busy" error due to the esd daemon: since I don't need sounds from GNOME,
