I'm sorry for your unlucky attempt! Here is the rest of my story...

I finally disabled the on-board sound card and got back to my old 
Ensoniq 1371 (long live it!). No more problems, except for a "device 
busy" error due to the esd daemon: since I don't need sounds from GNOME, 
I simply disabled esd, and now lavplay plays fine.

So the problem could be related to the sound card, instead of lavplay. 
Please note that the software and the video card are the same, I only 
changed and configured a different sound card.

I had to disable the on-board ICH5 sound card for another, very strange 
problem: it plays fine, but it records very, very badly. Practically 
unusable. Even with every mixer control muted, every recording is 
affected by a terrible background disturb. With a normal recording 
level, voice and music are ugly and very loud.

After googling around without results, as I said above, I'm now using 
happily a very old sound card.
