Jenny, I completely agree with Buddy here. I actually test side-by-side every
day with an iPhone 4 and 4S and even there, the speed difference is pretty
obvious. So yes, you'll notice a marked improvement to say the very least, if
you choose to upgrade from your 3GS to a 4S.

For what it is worth, I just saw a very similar behavior this morning on my
MacBook Air 11 inch. I was focused on the Messages app and not focused at all
on Mail, and kept hearing VO say 'one row added' etc. as each new email message
was downloaded.
So even though I was focused with V

Notifications wasn't sufficient.
I have an activity for Mail with Verbosity set to Low, and links and URLs set
to play tone. This all makes Mail much less verbose and pleasanter to use.

Mark, have you tried selecting your 'Recently Added' playlist in iTunes? This
will show the latest files you've added so that you can either rename them or
change their classification to audio book if you choose..
