Deleted Messages in Mail Won't Go to Trash

I have 800 messages that I can hide via command-h, but I'd much rather delete them. The delete key does nothing. They're apparently marked as deleted, but don't show up in the trash. I've tried the rebuild option in the mailbox menu three times with no result. Any ideas? TiA, Teresa
