Hi Carolyn, This is coming from a relative Mac newbie, so should be taken with a grain of salt. However, I find that it helps to hide the sidebar with cmd-shift-d, at least in PDFs with tables of contents. I then interact with the text of the PDF and use vo-a for continuous reading.
