I think I recall having seen similar corruption in QEMU with older
versions of Ubuntu. And I think the fix was to switch the virtual video
hardware using qemu option: -vga std

@ Christoph ... I thought others were having issues with Ubuntu 12.10
also ? I have since switched to Mint 13 Cinnamon 64bit and it has been
absolutly flawless. I miss the Lens and certain aspects of Unity, but
with stability like this who cares.

I see this on 12.10. My wife and I use XFCE sessions and closing the lid
with either session active suspends OK, even if the other person is
logged in too.
If lightdm is on screen (i.e. one of us logged out or selected "switch
user") when the lid is closed the laptop stays powered on.

I am having a similar problem and none of the suggested fixes worked for
me. It seems to be an ALSA-related bug as I eventually noticed that the
output from alsa-info is different before sleeping and after resuming
(see attached).
