make sure you have the #!/bin/sh at the beginning of your .xinitrc file.

I have just discovered that APM in kernel 2.4.10 does not work (/proc/apm file
does not get created and consequentially apm progs do not work).

Problem solved!
Sam Varghese gave me the clue that combined with
previous suggestions solved the problem of getting rid
of enlightenment.The "home" directory for root is not
"home" but root. When I edited .xsessions in the root
directory, I got the icewm back.

About a month ago I started to see font problems in some X
programs. Instead of characters I see squares. I've attached a PNG
picture, of XEphem, which displays the problem. I've also seen this
problem in 'gnapster', although some fonts display just fine.

Check the Options and AllowOverride sections. I think the AllowOverride is
set to "None" by default.

and probably since I was running X and apt-get from a
virtual tty, that some parts of Xfree86 3.x were
