make sure you have the #!/bin/sh at the beginning of your .xinitrc file.
This was an old .xsession file I used:

#!/bin/sh
exec icewm-gnome
---------------------

& if this doesn't work, rename your .xinitrc file to .xsession.  One of
those should work :)

Or remove enlightenment.
