I've set up the /etc/pcmcia/apm.opt as follows
APM=suspend
If I run in manually ('cardctl suspend') then the card will
suspend (power off).
Otherwise
it will allow my PC to suspend, but with the pcmcia card fully
powered (light is on)

Combined with a SVGAlib console based image viewer like zgv or fbi to view
selected images from a give page, it makes for a capable browsing environment.

No, modprobing it didn't seem to change anything in the installer. It
seemed to be oblivious of the network support I had enabled manually.
