I'm not sure what's going wrong with your setup, but I installed the
mostly crystal theme on iceape, and I can switch themes with iceape
remembering my theme settings.
I saw that the theme you are trying to add is firefox only. Could that
be part of the problem?

I tried to replicate this on a machine running mozilla 1.7.8-1sarge8,
with enigmail and mailnews installed. This machine runs multiple
accounts and contains over 200Mb in mailboxes.
